Demons

I often found that the Phantom's fast firing guns tended to have a psychological effect greater than their actual effect. Opponents would tend to break away when you pounded them, thinking they were actually taking damage.

Didn't work on the AI, of course, but it did pretty well in modem and LAN matches.

Except they're not.

They may share a similar general appearance, but other than both being in WC games there's no connection between them.

Still, it is strange that Phantoms are pitiful, but Demons are dangerous foe - while they're the same craft...

I think they're actually entirely different models, they just look similar. The Demon is actually the most unique of what the Wikipedia once strangely labeled the 'Monster' fighters. Lets take a closer look at the four of them (I wish we had sprite images for the SWC ships...)

Scimitar, Super Wing Commander-

Demon, Privateer-

I think the two that are closest are the Armada Banshee and the SWC Scimitar - although they've clearly changed the dimensions somewhat. The Phantom and the Demon have unique back-ends and similar-but-not-identical fronts (two guns slung under the cockpit.)

Now, are the Privateer 2 Demon and the Wing Commander IV Banshee related :)?

And just to play Devil's advocate...

God, you forget how awesome some of this art is until you go back and stare at it.

Agreed. You guys should start doing front page posts of these images. Ship of the day/week maybe?

It would be a good way to complete the ships2 upgrade - one ship at a time every couple of days. We'll see - there's another big Point of Origin/Arena Artwork style 'daily update' that's being negotiated right now...

Here's Dundradal in my freakin face with a Banshee from earlier tonight.

They are pretty balanced. It's all about gun accuracy and making sure you don't fire too early and then don't have enough gun energy when you are at close range. There was a few times I was firing early and it cost me fighters in the long run.

Sweet. So how does the Goran fare against the Banshee?

The Goran's pretty bad ass. It takes a lot of pounding and keeps going:

Of course, the pilot has a big influence - and factors like control interface, processor power, internet latency also play a part.

That's neat how the MFD's and radar get blown out--I don't think that the other Wing Commander games include MFD failure when you take damage.

The VDU's in WC 1 and 2 displayed static when you took too much damage and the radar got blown up as well, along with other stuff in the cockpit. It is really neat.

Yeah I had some VDUs go to static yesterday when I was playing WC1. Was toying around with the DOS version I finally got. I beat Kursawa 2 on the 4th try, it was great.

Congratulations!

Incidentally, I checked my WC collection and found out I haven't WC 2 as CD version, though I am bidding on one at the US-Ebay at the moment.

There's one neat at the German ebay, as well: WC1+2 on CD, including the add-ons and speech pack, the package and the universe map but the seller want's 69,99 € or best offer. I offered him 40 € and he declined. I don't think I'll offer more money...

Ugh, I have been trying to find the floppy versions of SM1 and SM2 to go along with my WC1 CD-ROM. I have been unsuccessful for several years now...

good luck with your bidding!

I saw a floppy disk version of WC1 Deluxe on Ebay when I was looking for a CD version. It had all the documentation and the WC1/2 guide. I was lucky enough to find a WC1/2 Deluxe CD combo, but it came with no documentation.

With shipping just under $10 US.

IIRC it was like $6.45 for the CD and a bit less than that for shipping.
