Demons

Seventh Part of the Seal
I was just wondering if there was any way to purchase a Demon fighter in Privateer. Truth be told I am partial to the Centurion and its four gun points. I usually like to load it out with two Plasma guns, two Tachs, and a Plasma turret. Minus the turret, it reminds me of the Lance.

No, you can't buy a Demon. After the Tarsus, it's the three ships in the dealership.

There's also no reason to want to... they sort of suck. :) (... and they look suspiciously like the Phantom from Armada, which is probably the worst flyable ship in Wing Commander history.)

And I thought nothing could be worse than the Epee or the Tarsus... I've got to play Armada. :D

It's truly terrible if you don't believe in turning off cockpits, especially - since you can't see out of the darned thing *at all*...

The best way to describe it is like trying to fly while only looking out the letter slot of a front door from 5 feet away.

With guns repositioned in a uniquely awkward way.

... guns which are akin to bringing a butter knife to an atomic bomb fight when compared to anything else in the game.

Well put. This is fresh in my mind as I just took out a Phantom the other day for the first time in years.

It made me wish I'd turned on quick combat.

I like lasers and mass drivers but yeah, the phantom sucked, especially since you could manufacture wraiths for not a whole lot of additional resources.

I somehow managed to properly install the Armada disks with a bit of tweaking...

Please tell me there's a way to play with a mouse. Otherwise, it looks like I'll really need a joystick.:p

I'm in the same boat. No mouse control though, so either practice your keyboard skills or get a stick :)

I just have to chime with the bashing: the Phantom sucks horribly.

(Edit: Though I don't remember the guns positioning being a problem. Only the rest of the ship.)

They weren't positioned wide or anything - they were positioned 'up'... at the top of the screen, to match with the tiny amount of viewing area.

I think I'm going to do the latter, since playing Armada with the keyboard is kind of a pain. :)

Make sure you have the cycles up around 6k - 7k otherwise the controls are awful. That was my problem the other day. Now it's at least manageable.

I know... I'm just really bad at playing only with the keyboard. I mean, with the mouse/keyboard combo I can fire, afterburner, move, and use missiles at the same time, whereas with the the keyboard I'm having trouble performing more than two actions simultaneously.

Similarly, the mouse in Privateer sucks horribly. I wonder who had the twisted idea to make the mouse half-inverted.

Okay, so I've made it to the first mission with the Phantom. I find it quite hard to survive, but I think that's more due to the fact that I'm trying to fight Jratheks with a keyboard. Objectively the Phantom doesn't seem to be as bad as the Epee. The cockpit doesn't bother me that much, but that may be because I've gotten much better at using the radar after playing so many WC missions.
