changing mats

does anyone know a way to change the MAT files a ship uses without completely retexturing it? you know, just change the numbers of the mats that it uses, but keep the same coordinates in those mats and such.

Just a guess, have you tryed to find wich mat you want to change and just replave with a new one with the same name?
As i said, just a guess...
