Capship engagements...

Frog Blast the Vent Core!
I was just thinking after reading an older thread about capship engagements in the games. We see them very rarely and when we do they are usually over rather quickly as one ship will usually pummel the other one.

One of my favorite missions with lots of capship fighting is the Ella a1 mission where you have to slip past the superbase. You face a frigate, cruiser then a destroyer all of which try to close the range with the Intrepid so that they can start slugging it out. I used to love as the opening shots began to ring out from each ship as they got in range. For having such a small amount of turrets the big I could still throw out some damage.

Just wondering what people thought of this mission and any of the other capship on capship missions. (ie. WC3's escort the big boys mission where the ajax faces a Frathli II and the sheffield ? faces a light destroyer)

I remember a mission in WCP (possibly "Painting the Target") where if you don't do what you're susposed to, an alien capship pulls up along side the Midway and they start slugging it out with laser turrets, doing absolutely nothing to eachother. Did Confed somehow forget to equip their largest supercarrier with any serious ordinance?

I remember that mission in WC3 that you're talking about, and it's always been one of my favorites. I believe that at the three navs you see a Confed destroyer vs. a Kilrathi light destroyer, a Tallahasse vs. a Fralthi II, and a Confed destroyer vs. a Bhantkara.

Don't forget the two WC2 missions where you get to escort Gilgameshes against Kilrathi capital ships. On the second one you're up against a Fralthra, and the Gilgamesh always runs away. :)

I think its Tallahassee v. Bhantkara at the last nav? And yeah, the "no fly zone" between the two ships was always awe-inspiring.

Why should they? Carriers aren't supposed to get into slugging range with other capships, they sit back while their fighters and bombers do the fighting. If they do get into slugging range of enemy capships, it's almost certain they got there because the carrier skipper seriously screwed the pooch.

I'm pretty sure it was a sheffield...

There's also the classic concordia vs 2 frathla mission...although in that one the concordia can not be destroyed.

The Ves vs St. Helens missions are also interesting but not as good I think as the ones where their is a chance of the ships actually being destroyed.

If you're not careful in WC3, you'll see the bad result of a Kilrathi corvette picking a fight with a confed transport . . . unless you skin the corvette's turrets, in which case the transport will actually pick it apart.

You can always just take off 2 or 3 of the vettes turrets and then get a bit of a more fair fight, although the one tachyon turret might be enough for the vette to have the edge.

The confusion re: the destroyer is because the carrier is at the *second* nav point and not the third. The cruiser Ajax fights a Fralthi II at Nav. 3.

I don't recall correctly...do the destroyer and carrier start to slug it out or are they moving away from each other and hence not able to bring their turrets to bear?

I don't think they're moving. The capship fights are cheats, IIRC - if {Confed Ship} survives long enough, it fires a CSM and blows up its target automagically.

Yeah I remember that now. I always thought they were kat CSMs coming at the confed ships so I always blew them up for the first few times...

Yeah, there's a couple times in WC3 where they use the CSM cheat instead of having a real capship battle... the Victory blowing up the Kilrathi asteroid base at Delius is another.

I suppose they'd kill eachother eventually... but it'd be a fair fight, which would frustrate the game player. (You should never have a situation where you doe verything you're supposed to but you still lose...) :)

Yeah shoot down the CSM's. It takes a good 2-3 minutes, and you have to skin the AMG's from the Fralthi II to ensure the Ajax can win (otherwise, I think the Fralthi wins pretty much all the time in my experience), but one will emerge victorious.
