BREAKING NEWS: Wing Commander III on GOG (September 13, 2011)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
More amazing news out of GOG this morning, as the service has just announced that Wing Commander III is now available! WC3 is the last game in this 'set' of EA titles. The usual $5.99 will buy you a game that's easily worth ten times that--pick up your copy now! The download comes with the usual array of manuals and is DRM-free... and it also has more bonus features than we've seen in a GOG EA release before! As always, we'll be celebrating the release with retrospective updates about the making of the game and some of the fandom it has spawned over the years throughout the day--check back soon!

Nice job, everybody!

They credit me on their extras page, but it's the whole community who preserved this material over the years. And special credits to Pete for figuring out Origin's old Quark files, Ninja for cleaning up Warbirds... and anyone else I'm forgetting!

No, I don't think GOG puts out multi-language versions of games (yet.) If they ever want to, we have copies of the international releases for them.

This is great!!!!
I badly need payday to come round now so that I can buy this and privateer!!! (or failing that I will scrabling round for change under the couch and in my change jar :p)

Do you think we are going to see WCIV and Privateer 2 any time soon?

One of the official guides is a scan from Pix's Origin Adventures, he deserves credit for that one! (Great, great site if folks don't already know about it.)

Some of the EA legal approvals wouldn't have been possible without Chris Reid's quick thinking, too. But that's all I can say about that...

... and of course everybody who created this stuff in the first place.

Check back on September 22nd--I'm betting GOG will announce when we can expect the next set of EA games then. And I'm sure there's more Wing Commander to come. :)

Great news! Congrats to the CIC community. You'll notice WCIII is the cap stone for this GOG series. While I'm downloading ...

Does anyone know if this game supports game controllers? Specifically a Logictech Rumblepad 2.

Also I noticed 5 free games that I get just for joining GOG. Any recommendations on which ones are worth it?

It works fine with my USB joystick, so you would expect it to work with any other USB controller. The controls will be limited, 2 buttons and no roll with the controls. I tried the thrustmaster patch to see if the hat switches would work, no joy there.

What are the bonus features?

Extras are:

- Victory Streak, Playguide, Reference card (all rendered digitally from Origin's source files--they're nicer than any scan)
- Origin's Official Guide to Wing Commander III (again digitally rendered)
- High resolution scans of the color "Warbirds" poster
- Origin's Authorized Combat Guide to Wing Commander III (scanned, by Pix)
- Wallpapers of the box art
- An mpeg of the "Behind the Screens" VHS tape.
- An ebook of Fleet Action
- PDF of the shooting script.
- PDF of the Wing Commander series bible.
- AVIs of the deleted scenes not included in the PC version--the various newsbriefs, Hobbes' hologram and a few others.

Tyrian is a GREAT arcade shooter and Beneath a Steel Sky is a classic adventure game. The others aren't anything special (I kind of wish I could remove 'Teen Agent' from my wall... it sounds kind of like pornographic spyware.)

Edit--you can get Ultima IV for free, too, which is a classic Origin game.

That's awesome. I'm lucky enough to have all the original printed stuff that came with the game, but there's a whole heap of stuff there that I have not got and is worth the price alone!

Incredible! This is truly does justice to the epicness that is Wing Commander! :D

But the only question that remains is, will it work smoothly on Windows 7? I presume WCIII is being offered on multiple Windows interfaces, and before I go for the flight stick, I wanna be sure 7 is included here.

This is one of the greatest games of all time. In fact it is my favorite. Many people think too that Mark Hamill's greatest work was in Star Wars and as an animated voice actor but I think his compelling role as Colonel Christopher Blair to be one of the best of his career. I hope many will join me in paying the $5.99 to download WC III. It is a real treasure... thank you everyone for making this classic available. I am going to have my two sons and daughter play it with me tonight.

Fantastic job by the whole team in getting those extras in and approved. When even the masses are happy you know things are good...

All I wanna know is if they fixed the bug that forced me to lower cycles for the FMVs lest they get skippy and nasty.

If so, I'll buy a dozen.
