Its a tough call, but I like the Hornet the best. Why? I LOVE LASERS!!! They're rapid fire weapons if ever there was one! I think thats why I love the Banshee so much, the damn thing DUAL Lasers!!!
That plus I am very partial to green turrets, and will take speed and manuvering over armor any day.

Worst fighter: Honestly I don't have anything against any fighter in particular the only two I have to complain about are the Scimitars and Dralthis. The only thing that I can't stand about the Scim is that the damn thing's cockpit looks like the inside of my first car... an 89 volvo station wagon, with a similar red interior... good god... that brought back terrible memories...

The dralthi? well what can I say... I thought the range on the lasers in Crusade and SWC was LAME!!!
 
The Rapier for me.

Why? Honestly it's the artistic nature of that ship, it was like flying a Hornet with teeth. I remember the first time I flew a Rapier, after flying a Raptor for a while I was ready to turn that Rapier in for a Scimitar!

The shields felt weak, the armor felt non-existant, but then I realized something very important, THE RAPIER ISN'T A TANK!

Once I started actually flying the Rapier, I never looked back. To this day I still think I could pull moves in that fighter I never could reproduce in any other ship...

Just my 2 credits.
 
The Hornet was my first love, for the exact same reasons frostytheplebe offered. However, I instantly fell for the Rapier when I first saw and flew her in the game. ;)

I remember wanting to trade the Scimitar in for "my" Hornet in later missions. Really disliked the Scim back then, but for some strange reason, I grew fond of her in the years to follow. Probably wearing nostalgia goggles there... :D
 
I liked the Hornet, well after I got in the Scimitar I liked the Hornet.

However the Raptor is my absolute favorite. I liked it the moment I strapped in and saw that it had 4 guns. I love having a lot of firepower at my fingertips.
 
Raptor, all the way. I tend to get up close to a target, and its guns were great for tearing up a kat at short range. The raptor also carried your first serious missile loadout, which allowed it to hit a target at range. Gotta love all that armor, too!
 
Raptor. There's no WC1 fighter (other than the Hhriss, if you count SM2) that the Raptor can't kill from an aft approach in less than a second using guns only. For escort missions especially, being able to kill heavy fighters that quickly is such a big tactical asset. You can outdance just about any Kilrathi fighter with a Rapier, of course, but when there just isn't time to tango, it's all about the Raptor's ability to just annihilate a target in no time flat. No frills, no footwork... just a warhammer to the skull.
 
I like the Scimitar. It wasn't the most flashy fighter, didn't have the best weapons but it could get the job done. The Scim didn't excell in any category, but it could do just about anything. I admit that i loved the firepower of the Rapier, but like another poster it didn't have the armor or shields and i think fared better in the Scimitar than the Rapier because of that.

To me the Scimitar, along with the Raptor, has the fleel of being an older fighter that has been through a lot. Its a fighter that has a feeling of history, like our own history's F-4 Phantom II, which is something i like.
 
Raptor with the Rapier II in second. I loved Neutron Guns back in the day. I still wish the designers of most of the later games didn't try to weaken or remove the Neutron Guns.

I'd go with the Raptor, heavier gun loadout, all tracking missles, the extra armour, and the "ace in the hole" (mine) to scrape the annoying fur-ball off your back (Boom!, turned him into kitty-litter)
Rapier is a close second for me
 
Why is the Rapier I on the list when it only appeared in the movie and the movie-related novels? The Rapier from WCI was the Rapier II not the Rapier I.
 
Rapier, hands down. All the pros of the Hornet plus much more armament.

Raptor, Hornet and Dralthi are about the same for me.

Let's not talk about the Scim.

You are right. I should have placed him below. The Raptor that is. The Dralthi is just awesome if you know how to fly that baby. Just beaten by the Rapier Super Fighter. Ever flown between the shots of a Jalthi? No? Then you do not know how to fly a Dralthi ;-)

My only problem with the ship is the location of some of the instrumenst (shield display mainly).
 
The Raptor is my favourite, rather closely followed by the Rapier.

I loved flying the Dralthi because it was the first time you could fly a Kilrathi fighter and it is a good fighter but no match for the Raptor I think.
 
Rapier all the way... as TCN Blair said it...if you remembered you'd just stepped from a heavy fighter back to a medium fighter, you'd be wildly successful.

I loved getting lasers back, the range was essential
 
Whats up cool cats? New guy on board. I just want to start with that I absolutely love Wing Commander. From the games to the novels to the movie, it is amazing. Why I haven't registered before now is a mystery to me.

This is easy for me. The Scimitar all the way. I hated the Hornet. Yeah it was fast, but it just didnt have enough... 'umf' in it for me. When I first strapped into a Scimitar though... I just had a gut feeling that I was in a real STRIKE fighter. The first time I dusted a kitty cat with those mass drivers... I new I was home. I hated moving to the Raptor, yeah I loved the firepower, but it didnt feel right for me. The Rapier would go on to become one of my favorite fighters... only after they retired the Scimi :cool:.

Agreed. For all the hatred lumped on the scimitar, it was tough and pretty well armed. Definitely a step up from the hornet, I do love mass drivers. Still, my favorite has to be the raptor. It took everything good about the scimitar and doubled it!
 
I found that I really didn't "dislike" any one WC1 fighter...it seemed like they were dispatched on missions that were achievable (not talking SO1 or SO2 here ;)) for the fighter in question.

Example: Escort mission in a Hornet...never had any problems. Need to take on a Ralari? Send a scimitar... need to take down a wing of heavy fighters? Send a raptor.... need to blow up a Fralthi, 200 fighters, and a massive star base? Send 2 Rapiers :D
