A Phenomical Purchase (August 23, 2006)

Long Live the Confederation!
Reuters has posted a press release announcing that Electronic Arts has purchased Phenomic, a German game development house:
LEIPZIG, Germany, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Electronic Arts Inc., the world's biggest video game publisher, said on Wednesday it has bought German firm Phenomic for an undisclosed sum to gain a better foothold in real-time strategy games.

"We expect real-time strategy combined with broadband to open new, wider markets," Gerhard Florin, head of international publishing at EA, told Reuters in an interview.
The interesting thing about this announcement is the unusual focus: online RTS games. These are in no way a proven trend - combined with the money EA is spending on relaunching the Command and Conquer series, they must have a very interesting strategy mapped out. We can be happy that their future plans involve trying something unproven rather than simply waiting for other companies to develop the next big thing. Lets hope this new spirit will someday include bringing back Wing Commander!

I've also heard EA is doing or wants to do System Shock 3. Too bad it won't be anything like 1 & 2 :( Oh well theres always BioShock :)

Why wouldn't it be like 1 or 2? They weren't developed by the same teams, either... and Electronic Arts generally doesn't release bad games.

Agreed. The good thing is that we're getting TWO System Shock-like games... Everything about Bioshock makes it look pretty good. Ken Levine seems to know what he's doing.

And now we are ALSO getting SS3. Of course, the team doing it is more familiar with sandbox-like games, but I do think they can pull it off. I hope they take as long as needed to ship it.

Yes SS2 is a masterpiece, unforunately SS3 isn't being done by the original team. As long as EA doesn't try to take control of the development team SS3 might be good too. Bioshock has a better chance.

You're missing the point -- SS2 wasn't done by the 'original team', either.

Precisely. and SS2 is better than SS1. which is also very good, anyway.
I think both new games have a good "chance" of being very good.

Heres where I heard about it on Anandtech SS3

And I will have to agree with them.. We'd all love a SS3, but a SS3 done right, not another Deus Ex 2. Bioshock looks great. Sigh a ever growing list of games I need to get once I've got a new computer.

another developer down the drain..

I don't get that comment. It's not a purchase/ takeover yet, and even so that wouldnt indicate the end of Crytek in any way. Origin for example 1/ only lived as long as it did because of EA and 2/ lived for 10+ years under EA. EA may have some stupid buisness practices but try addressing that instead of this generic big-corporations-must-be-bad internet idiocy.
