    So... cockpits...

I never forgave WC3 for ditching left-right and rear cockpits views, and likewise never forgave WC4 for jettisoning them altogether. And I never got used to the cockpit-less view in FS2. HUDs have no personality, just an eyeball charging through space. But I didn't spend ten years of my life...

What made Maniac such an asshole in WC3?

Hm, I've only scratched the surface of WC2, and always figured Maniac developed into WC3 form somewhere in its characterization. Sounds like it's absolutely a case of the writers making some decisions for the character given the new format of WC3 and mixing an actor's performance into the...

KS Music transfer to original game

Do WC1 and 2 even have sound effects? I got around to 'em late and experienced them through dosbox with a soundblaster selected in the game installs. I tired a MUNT-derived MT-32 emulation and the music did sound better, but tended to really screw up on the dynamic cues in-flight. But in...

Another Internet Cynical Essay About FMV Games

he's basically saying what we all know in a more complicated way, that CD-ROM-enabled FMV could be a gimmick that developers hung on skeletal games. But yes, the data-capacity of the CD-ROM disc is not in of itself some kind of problem. The popularization of CD-ROMs made the data-intensive...

Wait, pardon my ignorance but I was unaware the movie and the games took place in the same continuity.

Choose the Coolest Cockpit (May 31, 2010)

Mech 3's were spartan and a bit too similar mech to mech but I liked 'em alot. 4's were terrible though! Absolutely awful, clumsy barely there butchered textures...oh man. Mech3 Mech4 (progress?) Agreed, though I'd never consider turning WC3's cockpits off, I hated how the ITTS would...

Choose the Coolest Cockpit (May 31, 2010)

I vote for WC1, classic, rugged, damageable and distinctive. I was so disappointed that WC3 didn't have artwork for side and rear views from the cockpits. Little did I know that WC4 would be removing them entirely! The dings and damage to the 'glass' in WC4 is so goofy looking without...

The sticks that got me through the Kilrathi War and beyond...

I should've phrased my post differently...I meant it goes without saying that a Thrustmaster is better than a Saitek, they are not even remotely in the same league. And I wasn't aware 'inexpensive' and Thrustamster belonged in the same sentence, I'm only familiar with Cougar HOTAS's. I...

The sticks that got me through the Kilrathi War and beyond...

Well, I've never heard anyone argue that a *saitek* was better than a Thrustmaster....that kinda goes without saying.

CH guy myself but love anything that's not a floppy over-designed logitech, saitek, or MS sidewinder.

we should probably stop talking about Xwing any-time now. BUT by the time we had Xwing Alliance, we were in the era of 3d-graphics cards so I mean, textured objects were basically a given. Xwing vs. Tie was in the transitional period, so, the revamped Xwing and Tie games in the...

    Lance? Dragon? Which is it?

Right...I'm one of the folks that thought the ship was called a Dragon, but I was trying to remember where I got that from...I knew it wasn't from something as obscure as Seether's 'Dragon Wing/Leader' comm chatter from the intro. It came from Pliers load-out screen comments.

agreed, there's something stately about the simple shapes of X/Tie, suits the game's impersonal tone very well - I'm playing through the Tie-Fighter Collector's CD on dosbox, and at 640x480 the game has actually aged really well. The ships are abstract enough that even without a historical...

Another Internet Cynical Essay About FMV Games

The fully bit-mapped 3-D ships of WC3 were a revelation for me. The combination of elaborate FMV and a cutting edge game engine was a one-two punch like I haven't experienced from a game since. Playing WC3 for the first time is the strongest gaming memory I can recall. But the flight engine...

Another Internet Cynical Essay About FMV Games

Well, Xwing/Tie + WC3&4 don't use vector graphics, they're polygonal engines and have more in common with the 3D of today's games than the old vector engines of say Battlezone or the Star Wars arcade game. Still I think I see your point - the hand-drawn work of WC1&2 has more personality -...

    Best tactics against Vaktoth?

I don't think its so much that the game gets *easier* its just that only certain *types* of encounters get harder. I don't notice much of difference between ace to crazy with Vaktoth and Cap-Ship encounters. You will notice however that some ships absolutely start spamming missiles at higher...

    Best tactics against Vaktoth?

The only ship IMO that would benefit from leaching a Vaktoth is a Hellcat...which no one should be flying anyway... Arrows can outmaneuver them, Thunderbolts and Longbows can blow them away with guns during forward passes.
