    Some ship stats...

I believe it's four for a Rigakh (bridge and three engines) and eight for a Hakaga (two bridges, six engines). Pretty certain about the Rigakh, not so sure on the Hakaga. Somewhere in my LP Standoff thread I will have written the answer down, but I'm at work at the moment and I try to avoid SA...

RSI Announcement: Live and Post-Live Thread

Well, it certainly looks pretty. Probably means I'll need a new computer. Beyond that... -Obviously it's heavily visually inspired by Wing Commander. Friendlies look like Terrans, enemies look like Kilrathi, the fighter cockpit looks like a 2667 vintage Rapier II. Which, given some of the...

    A silly challenge...

If you want that rhyme, V is for Vesuvius, first ship in its class

    A silly challenge...

S is for Strakha, the foe that keeps hidden T is for Tolwyn, hero or villain? And for those who object to Wing Commander's rather casual disregard for cosmology, an alternative Q: Q is for Quinson, who saw the war's end, R is for Rapier, the pilot's best friend

    Nothing But A Rich Man's Game (August 30, 2012)

Strangely, my first thought when I read the "patience of a saint" line didn't relate to loading times at all. I was thinking of the gameplay. Now, that's got to be at least in part because I didn't play WC3 until 2000 when even the oldest of computers had very little trouble loading the game...

Oh noes! Yous guys are been spam-a-lot'd!

That taunt always confused me. I mean, aren't we pretty much talking either/or with those two actions?

Time to Claim Party Prizes (August 13, 2012)

So as always when we play Birthday trivia, the winners of individual questions might have been more motivated by the novelty of knowing the answer to one of the questions rather than any actual desire to win the prize in question. Conversely, they might have really wanted something else but not...

    Wc4 difficulty

Missiles aren't useless in WC3. They have their problems, but that's got more to do with the Kilrathi than the missiles themselves - or, more specifically, the shape of their ships. Darkets and Paktahns are fine; you can reliably hit them with missiles and you can mostly control where the...

    Wc4 difficulty

You can't get it onto Nightmare by accident; you'd have to deliberately set it there and save that. You might well have thought you set it to Rookie where you actually left it on Ace though. WC4 difficulty is...a thing. I'm always amazed it never seems to get mentioned in reviews of the game...

No Mercy For Wing Commander IV, Colonel (July 26, 2012)

PC Zone, which was the highest-circulation UK PC gaming mag at the time, gave it a mid-80s score. PC games magazines in general universally hated the interactive movie format and anything that might have had something approaching that was marked down, since most reviewers seemed to regard story...

Special Operations 2 - Harder Than Its Predecessors (July 23, 2012)

British magazines tended to give mission discs low scores because there was a general perception they were poor value for money - you were paying for half a new game, and they judged it along something of those lines, expecting improvements on the base game rather than just more of the base...

    CIC's 14th Birthday

The best parallel we have for Tolwyn's career is probably Horatio Nelson, though Tolwyn was not fortunate enough to die during his greatest victory and therefore enter history with an unblemished reputation. Britain was at war for the majority of Nelson's career, and for somebody with a bit of...

Traitors Tried in the Court of Public Opinion (June 9, 2012)

Well, that's a bit up in the air, isn't it? The Behemoth is under construction at this point, but not ready yet, and if attacks like Operation Red Three had been authorised then the war might not have lasted long enough - other than in a mopping-up sense - for it to be deployed (and I have...

    List of planets 'killed' universally.

The Hari did indeed leave planets as lifeless husks after they were done with them, but that wasn't as a result of warfare, that was just how the society worked. "A thousand blasted lifeless worlds" is how Hari space is described in Fleet Action.

    Some ship stats...

You should be able to find it at CIC, I think. I'm pretty sure I did. It is indeed an editor for Prophecy/Secret Ops.

    Some ship stats...

Most of these can be dragged out of Standoff using WCPEdit if you're willing to solve a logic puzzle to work out which turret types are which (the Standoff team either couldn't or didn't rename the Secret Ops guns they repurposed). I think the Hakaga is two different ships flying in very close...

    On recoil...

Made this argument for my Wing Commander III let's play over on the SA Forums, and thought that CIC would probably be interested. A lot of my assumptions are a bit questionable, but there's too many unknowns to get anywhere without making some. I'm trying to figure some things out about the...

    Recommended joysticks?

The other big question to ask is whether or not you're right-handed. Sadly, a fairly large number of sticks are still moulded to fit a right-handed grip, which is incredibly annoying for the sixth of the population that can't use them as a result. I can recommend low-end joysticks if you're...

WC vs History - Don't Give Up The Ship! Fight Her Till She Sinks. (June 22, 2012)

I can't really help you with the Americans so much, but there's a few British officers of that period who wrote memoirs. Actually, British naval officers seem to have been great writers in general, but most of them tended to stick to letters rather than full memoirs. Some of the more notable...

WC vs History - Don't Give Up The Ship! Fight Her Till She Sinks. (June 22, 2012)

An excellent (somewhat fictionalised, though entirely based on historical documentation - "It seems to me that where the Royal Navy and indeed the infant United States Navy are concerned there is very little point in trying to improve the record, since the plain, unadorned facts speak for...
