Ahh, you prove my point -- deer *aren't* smart enough to do anything but run... and they're very, very often preyed upon.

Yes, but we do hunt deer, and we are somewhat smarter than most deers.

they aren't bright because prey animals aren't that bright.

Predators have keener survival instincts. Prey animals and those in the lower food chain offset these by being able to multiply faster.

But Mad Hatter, Humans are not predators, at least not by creation. Our current state of existence copies that of the predator, but historically, we're a prey species, hunted and eaten.

So deer aren't designed to counteract our hunting methods. Wait a few millennia, and let evolution kick in for them, they'll have kevlar skin.

I was just retorting to the example that flies and deers are prayed upon by animals that aren`t much smarter than they are. Flies are *hunted* by predators which aren`t much smarter than them, but deers are.

Name one species of hunter that preys upon your common deer that is also significantly smarter than it. Note that since Humans are a prey species by nature, they don't count.

Ohh... touche.

But don't forget that humans are omnivores, not carnivores.

We also prey on those green thingies they call veggies...

Wolves are significanly smarter. To muddy the waters further, I'll state that an intelligent species MUST be K selected rather than an R selected population

Some of the pack hunting behavior of species like Hyennas suggests intelligence. Part of it depends on what you are measuring as intelligence. Pumas hunt deer and are quite intelligent. Just ask any rancher who has had problems with keeping them out, or tracking them down.

Intelligence depends on what factor you are looking for. Either that be intelligent at hunting, eating, blinking...
