Wing Commander:.....??? which will be the new name:)

Oh by the way, regarding the Eisen, (this is assuming the designer of SO to be taken out of the equation). Why would a ship as important as the so called Vesuvius Class TCS Eisen be one, named after a Rear Admiral who is probably an unknown to many. Obviously, a great man/character, but surely in ConFed's long history there were people of greater importance or events that shaped history more than one man.

Secondly, if the ships were named after mountains, why would ConFed, with a tradition of naming, throw in relatively unimportant man's name into the equation? Surely the Krakatoa or Everest would be much more grander sounding names. Names that stir pride and awe in anyone who hears it?

This is in no way an attack on the character of Eisen, I thought he was a very respectable, honourable man.

---Indeed he was. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this. Far be it from me to cause any undue anxiety, but I believe I heard that Jason Bernard died of a heart attack some time ago. Perhaps this is simply ORIGIN's way of paying tribute to the man.

Indeed, that was quite a large part of it. Also, do you call a man who was a huge player in averting a war and defeating the Black Lance an unimportant person in history? The BL never would have been stopped if he hadn't gotten to Earth, gotten the St. Helens and allowed Blair to head to Earth.

Ship names (especially those of large, expensive ships) are largely influenced by a desire to sooth the public's opinions on military spending. Thus, naming one after the recently deceased military celebrity Eisen would make sense.

I don’t think that Origin’s bare say-so should always have equal weight with the canon of the games or the other respected sources. LOAF’s observation about the number of wings on the Eisen and his other common sense arguments are stronger evidence than the off-the-record or behind-the-scenes decision of “SO’s” lead designer. If a future game revealed the Eisen to be another class of ship (but otherwise accounted for LOAF’s points), then I doubt any of us would claim there was a real contradiction. We understand that game development comprises quite a gauntlet, and more than a few ideas or contentions that "go in" don’t come out . . . and don't have to.

The extrinsic statements we should accept at face value are those “on the record” made about an existing game, such as Origin’s assurance that P2 takes place in the WC universe. That sort of solo statement is no different in kind from commentary in a game manual or official guide, and what undergirds both is the sensible belief that the “author” will ideally avoid embarrassing contradictions in future published story lines. (That doesn’t mean contradictions won’t occur, only that until they do, we have no good reason to doubt such statements any more than the “facts” presented in the games themselves.)

(<Sigh.> My last post as a Cadet.)

nemisis. Origin created the the games. It them makes sence that they would know the story they were writing fo the games. In other words, what Origin poeple say about what is cannon is very important.

iCe don't be so uptide.
those girls are those for there looks.
and play-ing in a porn movie only shows that she looks mighty fine

and he was genuinely a good actor. i remember when he said

" I fought with Captain Dominguez 40 years ago during the Venice offensive. Now he's dead at the hands of one of his own? What is all this coming to?" he did that well.

what other stuff did tom wilson do? i heard the name before but then its a common name

Yes it is. My point was about its importance compared to other information, in particular that found in the games, manuals, etc.

The issue is about reliability (how committed Origin is to the “fact”) and hierarchy (whether the “fact” is therefore more or less reliable than another “fact”), and goes beyond whether a statement is published or unpublished. For example, we commonly (and rightly) favor the canon of the games over that in the novels. And I daresay we would look more favorably upon a development team’s formalized ship list that names the Eisen a Vesuvius than we would an anonymously scribbled note from a staff meeting that says: “Blair seduced by Nephilim to be their leader”.

Actually loaf has a pretty good point as to why the Eisen may be a Vesuvius class, to sooth public opinion. It makes sense especially as its seen that the ConFed government is very touchy on military spending. Never thought of it that way.

With regards to Eisen (Jason Bernard) I liked the actor and the character. I did not intend to tarnish the image or play down the importance he played. However what disappoints me is that people take it the wrong way so easily and suddenly it turns into a holy war. I'm just putting forward a logical point that a classes often tend to follow a naming trend, ie, Vesuvius/Mt Helens, Midway/Mistral Sea.

Finally, I believe I have been much maligned by ice. I said a comment out of jest. Get over it. There is no need to get abusive. Fact, she starred in porn flicks. I'm afraid you can't pretend she didn't. As an actress, I think she's ok. I didn't once talk about her movies, I've never seen one by her. I don't need a self righteous person to tell me what I should and should not talk about. Thats what the chat rules are for and if what I say is deemed inappropriate a mod will remove it.

“Blair seduced by Nephilim to be their leader”

Who thinks that this sounds a little too far fetched for the next WC game? I personally think the gaming public would have had enough of Blair. The 'good' winning ending of WC4 (flight instructor) I thought was a nice ending for Blair. It summed up his attitude well. He tried to retain some sort of anonimity in the face of being know as the man who blew up Kilrah.

I think Blair's portrayal in Prophecy was a bit out of character. It seemed to incorporate some of Tolwyn's character traits.

Although ships in WC do sometimes share similar names, there are always quite a few exceptions -- just look at the Bengal class (G)

he shouldnt be brought back, he died on the wormhole thing and that should be left alone. if another game is ever made though, maybe they could show his funeral thing. would be a nice touch

The problem with having it as the intro movie is that it could be too far removed from the next plotline.

I was quite disappointed by Prophecy. Characters, engine, I liked, but the cuts in plot and video destroyed it. Especially after the masterpieces of WC3 and WC4. Anyone think that it should've been left as Price of Freedom?

Prophecy wasn't meant as an ending, but rather as a new beginning -- it accomplished that very well, IMO.

(You want an epilogue? Use Privateer 2!)
