Wing Commander Academy CD Version

Hello all,

I figured this was the best place to come if I wanted an answer to any questions concerning Wing Commander. I'm trying to collect all the WC PC games that exist, but I'm limiting it to CD versions since they're more complete than the floppy versions, not to mention the fact that floppies can't be used in modern computers.

Anyway, the most elusive game so far has proved to be Wing Commander Academy. I only collect complete, boxed sets, but I've yet to see a boxed copy of Academy that isn't one of the 'CD-ROM Classics' editions. CD-ROM Classics, from what I can tell, include the CD in a generic jewel case and have a black & white technical manual with the game manual on the disc. The version I want would have the original full colour manuals and papers, etc. and jewel case artwork, if applicable. So far, I've only seen this for the floppy version.

Basically, I'd like to know if a CD version with full colour manuals and inserts, etc. exists. Otherwise, I'll just buy a floppy version mainly for the manuals and a CD version for the CD. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Pictures would be even better! Thanks very much!

I haven't seen one in a long time. My copy of WCA is one of the classics editions so it lacks the physical manual, however it is on the disc.

Best of luck in trying to find one, but I think it might be a bit difficult. Maybe someone else here will know.

Your suspicion is correct, there's no "full" version of Academy on CD-ROM--just the 'classic' one.

IIRC, there was a version of the gravis joystick (Analog Pro) that came with Wing commander II CD Deluxe, OR WC:Academy(not sure if it was CD or Floppy version) bundled alongside it in a retail box. (both versions were stacked in large towers of boxes in the netherlands around 1993)

I got mine in a "classics" package too, and was glad i did, Academy has very little replay value IMHO.

Academy didn't really have many extras anyway, but the manual had some nice background information about the ships and stations. Oh and they were shown in actual graphics instead of black silhouettes.

And the "full" boxed version of Academy only had a black & white manual.

I would highly recommend getting a USB 3.5" floppy disk drive. They're pretty convenient for getting old games onto new computers.

Further reason to get it. The manual does sound nice, black & white or not. I just lost a bid on ebay for the disk version, haha. Didn't get home in time to monitor it. Oh well, there'll be another.

Using a USB floppy drive is actually a very good idea. I'll probably end up getting one and making diskette images to store on my hard drive since floppies don't withstand time as well as CDs and DVDs.

Thanks!
