Wing 1: Is there a guide identifying the sleeping pilots?

Rear Admiral
Hey friends, just as the title says. Has anyone made an annotated image that labels all the sleeping pilots in the barracks? I want to make a pleasing tableaux :)

Got a new joystick and doing a replay with @AllTinker 's excellent WCAT! Thanks for your hard work, feels like one of those "this is how I remember it" remasters.

I'm not sure there is an official answer! But if I had to guess:

Maniac Knight
Hunter Angel
Bossman Paladin
Iceman Spirit

Thanks LOAF!

I made this for myself based on your guesses and thought I'd share

I thought Paladin would be more careful with his uniform. Still, it is a neat immersion detail that the people in the beds are the actual wingmen and not random pilots!

It is interesting that men and women share the same space indicating a sense of camaraderie. Yes, I guess such an arrangement was made out of necessity, but it is a great immersion detail nonetheless!

I always thought they where Generic pilots not the ones you fly. There are a lot others than the usual group we have known .
Interesting theory but except maybe Paladin , others dont lookalike a lot in my opinion

You are right, only the asleep versions Paladin and maybe Maniac look like the pilots we see at the bar. Speaking of the bar, do we know how Sam (Shotglass) got his name? Could be a reference to Casablanca's "Play it again Sam"? @Bandit LOAF ideas?

It kind of feels like that, but Sam in Casablanca wasn't a bartender. I think the proliferation of bartenders named Sam (like Cheers!) goes back to Sam the Bartender on Gunsmoke.

Right, he was the pianist, but from what I have I read, the Wing Commander universe has had countless influences. It recently occurred to me that Iceman, although he is based on Clint Eastwood, somehow also reminds me of Bogart, especially his terseness.

Also, speaking of references and influences how come Masterson is so well connected? Doesn't he have volumes of books/discs/whatever to curate? Is it some kind of American academic stereotype?

That's a good point! I guess less the job of bartender but the role of confidant connects Casablanca to later media.

Masterson is kind of odd! The American librarian stereotype is usually either an absent minded professor type or a little dictator that demands order in their kingdom. Masterson doesn't really fit either so well, he has an edge and some agency.

Exactly, like the bartender in Crius, who also makes great stew .. though who would eat stew in a bar? I suppose it is one of the little Tri-System peculiarities 🤔🤔

As someone who does catalog work in an American university research library and repository of federal/state government documents, I have to wonder where Masterson comes up with enough funds to pay privateers a competitive wage in the tens of thousands of credits (at the time I penned WCRPG, I came up with an exchange rate of something like $4.65 USD per credit based on the "beer standard", so even 10k credits would be more than my year's wages). I haven't gotten a raise above the rate of inflation since the pandemic. Leaves me to believe that Masterson is not only Dean of Libraries, but also probably the local Provost...you know, someone who actually gets to hold on to the pursestrings...

(I work with a guy who's got a mustache like Masterson's...he's Canadian.)

You have a fascinating job! Yes, probably Masterson is not a librarian, but someone high in the administration. This is probably how he knows that people are looking for treasures through Oxford's files. The only other alternative I can think of is that his is an agent, probably for Confed Intel. After all, it makes sense to have someone in Oxford to keep an eye on things, especially on whatever Dr. Monkhouse reports.

Is not only the mustache, but also the color of his sweater which adds to the intrigue!
