What are these...

It's stuff that takes hydrogen or something from space and use it for fuel and stuff, or whatever. The Dragon red glowing things supposedly are for the same purpose.

I remember that "Elite" had fuel scoops. Is it the same thing?

Can you reallly take something from nothing? I would think the blue glow is simply from the heat emissions produced by whatever is running the engines - matter/antimatter.

Space is not totally empty. Interplanetary space is filled with gas and dust--much of it from the solar wind. It is billions of times thinner than Earth's atmosphere, but there are still hundreds of atoms in every cubic centimeter--enough that you can scoop them up for fuel if you are traveling at hundreds of kps. There is infact a real life design by a physicist named Bussard for an interstellar ramrocket that would accelerate to near-lightspeed using fuel collected from the interstellar medium.

Yup, they're the intakes (or, at least the focal points of the intakes -- the actual thing grabbing the hydrogen is a huge multi-square-kilometer elctromagnetic field...).

I dont know what they really do......anyway its mentioned in wc4 that Dragon uses the same thing with the Capships ,thats why it has its own "intakes" or whatever (the 4 glowing red things).

Even in Prophecy some of the new generation Fighters ,uses the same technology, such as Vampire,Panther etc.Even the ThunderBolt in SO has blue glowing intakes ;)

Could they be like the Warp Coils on Star Trek Starships?

Actually, the Star Trek ships have the bussard ram scoops (named for the guy that came up with the idea)-that's why the front of the engines have that red glow. So it's not to unlikely that there'd be something similar in WC.

The interesting thing about the Dragon isn't that it has Hydrogen Ramscoops, which all fighters have, but rather that it it has a matter/anti-matter powerplant and runs at a hydrogen surplus, rather than a hydrogent deficit, like most other fighters.

Which gives it unlimited fuel and a massive bank of afterburners.

I think they're all supposed to have intakes. At least that's what I recall LOAF stating a long while ago...

I'm talking about the blue glowing capital ship-like intakes
And I was agreeing with you. I don't think the actual colour means anything, though.

It's like how Cam said - for style, or just to make it pretty. A blue glow looks better than a red or green or pink or purple or yellow or black(?) etc glow. It's aesthetically pleasing.

I know about the Ram Scoops. I was talking about the Warp Coils (The Bits either on the Side or the top of a War Nacelle in Star Trek, they glow blue)

They are maybe for that ,but what about the "real" universe......that`s what we are discussing.I dont think Confed just put some glowing lights at the intakes just to make the ships look pretty :p :p

Okay...

What are intakes and what are not...

Are those blue glowing things INTAKES, or are they reverse thrusters?

The Talahassee for example does not have glowing thingies, they have vents.

The Concordia-Class carrier has vent like structures on their fins (leading-edge). The Ranger probably has the same (the Concordia-Class is basically a modernized, scaled-up Ranger-Class)
