No, that would be much, much worse - WCP can't handle 50,000 asteroids. Hell, I doubt even something more modern like FS2 would have trouble with that many asteroids. I would recommend values between 2000 and 5000. And of course, for small asteroid belts, even less is fine - it's just when you're talking about 500 for 100,000 metres that it gets a bit extreme ;).

As for the rest of the mission, there's way more than enough sample WCPPas code out there (notably UE) for you to look at, and between Standoff and a full-time job, I don't have the time to walk you through this.
 
Add three enemy ships with one function, add another nav main, add three nav functions, and add a function for within range sphere. I don't remeber the function line, though.

Try going through the full tutorial for Pascal 1 and 2 at the UE site. That will get you going for the basics. The rest is mostly exploring the functions.
