WCP Multi on a network?

Scatter

Spaceman
Is there anyway to play the WCP Multi-player mod on a network? I am getting my 3 sons into the WC games, and their network is not on the internet. Every time I try to launch the multi mod, it errors out because it can't log into that score server.

Any ideas??
Thanks!

You can play over a network you just need to use the host machine's IP address and follow the instructions in this thread to setup the game.

How is the network setup? Is it 3 machines connected through an ethernet hub?

This is the problem. Once I enter the game parameters, it prompts for a crius.net account. No matter what I enter for user/pwd, it give an error and ends the game :(

I have the 4 pcs on a linksys router/switch. It has DNS, so I didn't have to hardcode each pc. Runs perfect, never a glitch!

Have you tried just leaving the fields blank?

I'm not sure if HCl made it a requirement to report scores to the CIC. KrisV or ChrisReid might know if it is a requirement.

Also, if you want to talk in real time about this I'm on #wingnut now. We could probably figure it out there.

The IRC link is the second one in from the right side on the tool bar at the top of the page. That will launch the Java chat.

Just tried it. If I leave both fields blank (Username & Password) and press the OK button, nothing happens. The prompt screen stays up!!
If I enter a Username but leave Password blank, the prompt screen stays up.
If I enter Password but leave Username blank, the prompt screen stays up.
Only if I enter both a User and Pwd, the screen continues, then in a few seconds I get the "Authentication Error" message.

If I press the CANCEL button, I get returned to the Server/Client mode selection screen.

Maybe there is a test User/Pwd code that I can enter for it to bypass authentication?? I tried test/test, but that's not it!

Hmm alright. I'm going to shoot off an e-mail to HCl to ask about this. He may have made it a requirement to log scores to the CIC without realizing it may have hindered people from playing on local networks.

Would it be possible to connect their network to the internet? If only for the purpose of recording scores? As I'm not sure if there is an immediate work around or how quickly HCl could patch around this.

The launcher will try to authenticate your Crius account because we didn't want people submitting scores under someone else's name. If you can't give their local network a gateway, then I don't see any way around this apart from running a webserver inside the local network that will authenticate any username/password combination and then setting a local IP address for wcnews.com in your hosts file.

I was hoping there was a value to enter that would skip this check and upload, but does not appear so.
Don't want to put their lan on the net. Then I have to add firewall, virus software, rootkit checker, ... Its a closed/safe network we use for gaming. It was cheaper building 3 exact pc's than it was getting 3 PS3's :) I will have to look into the Freespace project, as that has multiplayer, but may be too complex for a 8/10/10 year olds to pick up effectively.
Any other multi-player space sims out there?

Try Starlancer -

As a plus it has an entirely cooperative multiplayer campaign mode. Even some of my non space-sim gamer buddies love to play it.

Don't give up hope just yet. I'm waiting to hear from HCl still, he might be able to disable the feature. I'll let you know once I hear from him.

Hey guys,

Sorry for not answering sooner, i usually don't keep track of most chat zone threads, just noticed this one when Dundradal brought it to my attention.

The scoreboard was only introduced on the latest version of the patch and, as Kris said, username authentication was inserted to prevent people from submitting scores under someone else's name. Looking back, it would probably have been a better choice to disable scoreboard submission if no valid Crius username/password was inserted, instead of making it mandatory. This way the patch would still work in the situation you describe. I'll try to address this sometime in the future.

For now, you can always try the previous version, which is in fact identical to the latest version but has scoreboard code disabled. Be sure that all 3 computers have the old version installed though, different versions of the patch may not play along with each other all that well. You can download it here.

Hi HCI,
Do you have another link? This one has the same multiplayer.exe as release 1. It still asks for the user/pwd.
thanks!

C:\Temp2>fc multiplayer0.exe multiplayer1.exe /b
Comparing files multiplayer0.exe and MULTIPLAYER1.EXE
FC: no differences encountered

Even that one has the multiplayer.exe with the login check!!

Is there an even older file somewhere? Maybe the original beta multiplayer.exe was in a zip by itself? It looks like the EP packs all have the latest multiplayer with the user check.

thanks!

Hmmm. The file I linked was the original beta package I thought. Try searching the front page for "Prophecy Multiplayer" and look around 8/10/06 that's when the patch was released.

Kris might be able to find it easier if that doesn't work. I would have thought the one I linked would have worked though since it's linked from the original front page story.

EDIT: Also, jumping onto IRC we can help you in real time instead of through the CZ. I don't get out of work for an hour but afterwards I'll be on for a bit before going out tonight, so if you want to stop in then we can see what we can figure out.

hold on, I may have it. I started checking every file within the zip file. Looks like a dll file is different!! There is wcpmp.dll and wcpmp_launcher.dll have different dates. I will report back soon!

Alright, great. If that doesn't work jump on IRC around 5pm EST and we can see what we can do.
