WC2 experiences...

I HATE the "weapon destroyed" effect, although it is a big part of the "suspension of disbelief". Quite probable, although not very nice when it happens. Unless you prefer a solid stream of weak gunfire to bursts of stronger stuff.

Speaking of solid streams of weak gunfire, is there any way to dodge flak cannon? I notice NPCs running around near the capships with full shields, while im hauling and praying that I get out of there while I still have something on my ship...

I got a lot those in Saber & Epee missions. Something to do with their weak shields. Anyway, I switch to battle view for evasive action in those missions. It's a bit disorienting, but works for me.

stay in the cockpit, but just use bursts of the afterburner in combination with a turn. Gives you a nice afterburner slide, which A. moves you out of the line of fire and B. spoils the aiming of any rear turrets. Perfect it in Prophecy first, if possible, then apply to the earlier games.

I was referring to WC2 and earlier.
In WC3 and up, I can always fry them first before they could halve my shields.
You have more control of your ship and you can tweak the settings to suit your style.
(More to gun & shields for me)

I was referring to practicing the tap-the-burners technique in WCP because it is pretty forgiving when you slip up and do a headon with a Dralthi. Try to practice it on the Tigershark with ITTS off and no CMD so you get the most WC1-like feel (similar weapons, no autoslide, similar handling). If you can get through a large bughunt without a collision, you should be able to use it well in WC1 and WC2. Watch out for the Rapier though, it's less of an afterburn than a teleport. You're suddenly in the same spot as the guy youre chasing

AARRGGHH!!!! Finally able to get past the Gratha but am running up cold against the destroyers... How are you supposed to kill those two Fralthi (or are they Fralthra? Isnt Fralthi plural for Fralthra anyway?) when they keep nailing you with a/m? I know that they dont fire it that often, but getting a torp lock and getting close enough to launch while surviving that stuff is more than a little difficult. It's bloody impossible. Does anyone have any suggestions? Preferably ones that involve dodging a/m fire? (slow to aim and fire my ***!!!)

Once the fighter cover is clear, pull way out of range of the enemy ships and let your shields fully charge. Focus on one ship. At the max range you can get, start the torpedo lock and stay at 0 kps. Once you have a lock crank it up to full. Once the flack starts firing, move around as much as you can without losing lock. At about 2500 or less, let go the torp. Try to note where the other cap ship is and when you turn away from this one, try to keep your primary target between you and the other cap ship (cuts down on the fire a bit. Jink and dodge as much as you can until you get out of range. Let your shields fully recharge. Go after your primary target the same way you did the first time and pull out the same way(trying to keep as much distance as you can between you and the other cap ship) Pull back out fully recharge and repeat on the second capship. It should be easier since there is only one of them.

If you see one of the big old blue balls o' fire, avoid them even if it means losing the lock, since they will take a good chnk out of you. It's easier to turn around and try again. Trust me. Good luck.

How about helping me with my problem?

WildWeasel: Is there a problem?

Chernikov: Firstly, like Shane said, you have to aim from outside their range. About 13000 will do just fine.
Secondly, don't worry about the flak. Just pretend that it's not there, and that it's not shredding your armour

.
This leaves only one problem - the AMGs. Now then. Usually, you will only have to worry about one AMG - this is because the second Fralthra (yes, Fralthra is the correct term, both plural and singular. Fralthi is a different class, and is also both singular and plural) will either be obscured by the first, or its firing angle will be such that it's 99% guaranteed to miss.
So what to do about the last AMG? Well, you will find that its refire rate is so slow, that the Fralthra can only fire it once or twice during your torpedo run (and another one or two shots as you retreat). Naturally, you prefer to have it fire just once. This is what you do:
1. Once you've got lock, start out towards the Fralthra at about 200kps (yes, that's right). This way, it fires the first blast while you're still miles away. So, even a slight adjustment of course at this point will save your ship - and you won't lose lock.
2. Once you're certain that the first blast is of no danger to you, hit the burners and charge the Fralthra. You want to get there before it can fire a second shot.
3. At 3000 metres, fire the torpedo, and run like hell.
4. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. After the third repeat, you will be much surprised by the fact that you've finished the mission

. Pick up Hobbes with your tractor. You can also pick up Bear if you really want to (but I don't recommend it). Fly back to the Concordia, and bask in the glory that is rightfully yours

.

Also, note that if you don't think you can destroy both Fralthra, you can just abort the mission. If that happens, you will have to fly one more mission, but it'll be a lot easier than this one, and you can still get the winning path ending. However, the casualties on our side will then be much greater, especially on Ghorah Khar.

About what I was trying to do. It's so much easier in a Broadsword. Just laugh evilly as their shots smash into you shields (your armor not even getting scratched)...

The Broadsword is a flying tank, it can take quite a beating.

Torpedo runs aren't that difficult.
Don't forget why they call them 'runs'.
Quarto's tactics works great (btw, thanks for the elaboration of the 'run').

When you have two Fralthra firing AMs, you would be lucky to get one. Sabres are the best for that mission. Why do you think the kitties fly Grikaths for?

Keep yourself Dynamic; always moving and always strafing. If you keep moving, that's okay; the AMG has a very slow firing rate. As long as you don't move too much to lose your target lock, you'll do fine!

Oh, I've been doing that!
But I have yet to fly a Broadsword against two Fralthra w/ Gothri escorts. Hmmm! I have heard of fan made missions and editors. Better yet, I might try to find Academy and simulate that... But as far as I could remember, it only offers a Ralatha.
