WC 3-5

Hey all,

Have been coming here for ages but only lurked :p

I have been trying to get back into WC and started playing Prophecy with the upgrade dvd (cheers Mario "HCl" Brito) and it has been ace!

But now I am looking to play WC3 and WC4 but need advice!

I have WC3 and WC4 (both CD and DVD versions) and was wondering whether there is any way to get these working under Windows 7, if there are any upgrades for them (hi-res videos for 3, or upgraded dvd videos for 4 and anything that makes it easier to run/makes it look better)

Cheers all!

The Kilrathi Saga had a windows executable for WC4, not sure about compatability, but you may get them to run under DosBox. You should check the technical support area, it will help you out.

for wc3 if you have the win version you can use ddhack by Sol that was put out some time ago to remove the interlacing and add filtering, for wc4 you can use dxmci from gulikoza to get the dvd ver running properly, though the game itself has quite a few palette problems unless you kill explorer.exe, I don't know what for something about randomizing the color palette or something. If you do go the dosbox route that centaurianmudpig suggested, i suggest Taewoong's svn build of it. There is everything from mt-32 emulation added to voodoo graphics emulation to an in-program gui to change most of the cfg settings on the fly. To find any of these things, search engines are your friends.

There is a windows 95 patch for wc4 in the CIC's files somewhere.
However, as for windows 7 compatability, I know it's supposed to be hard to get working but i installed the dvd version on my laptop yesterday, installed fine, set the compatability to windows 98 and ran as administrator and it ran perfectly (I had installed Gulikoza's dxmci patch too of course) with no need to kill explorer or anything. So before you try that sort of thing, test it with the basics!

I seem to recall a fan made wc3 to win95 patch using the exe from the KS version but that might just have been a conversation about how it was impossible. Have a search for it just in case though.

Obviously though, if you have a fast enough pc you could just play the dos versions of 3 and 4 in dosbox :D

WC4 runs fine for the most part in Win7(with the win95 patch) as does the the DVD version . Some people (especially with the 64 bit version of win7 ) do have a bug show up where the palette of the gameflow and spaceflight is messed up (DVD videos should look fine). Otherwise it's playable. There is an akward work-around though.
