Was Privateer Cut Short!?

Darkmage

Vice Admiral
I've been digging around in the privateer priv.tre file, and I managed to extract some things which do NOT appear ingame... these items indicate that there was more planned in privateer, but was axed for some unknown reason.

What sort of things did you find? I suspect there are many things included in any game which don't actually appear to the player, for whatever reason.

ok, here it comes... I located extra missions which suggest that fixers were going to play a larger role in the game. INCLUDING THIS:
Hi, any good deals going down at this table?
Could be. I'm looking for an ace to pick up a load of $CB from the $SN base......in the $SS and drop it in the $DS at the $DN base. And I'll tell you......up front, those systems have been unstable from time to time. Better be a substantial sum hanging on this job. $PY. Can you do it?
I think I better pass this time.

Say, what's up? You must know, $CS, that we despise your evil technology, but we're willing to use it......against a greater evil--the confederation at $DB base. My fee for that kind of run is $PY. Your fee for this sacred job will be forthcoming. Will you assist our cause?
Maybe I'm just paranoid, but fanatics put me in the mood for caution.
these are ripped directly from the priv.tre file
put simply the first is a cargo run, the second is a RETRO mission... there is also a jailbreak, and a few others...

That's quite correct... there's a whole bunch of different, generic missions in there. I would assume that originally, they had intended to have a bunch of generic fixers (which would make a hell of a lot of sense, considering how useless the Priv bars are in their present form) who would give you more unsavoury missions. Assassinations, smuggling runs, all sorts of fun.

Why they didn't implement them is anyone's guess. Personally, I'd say they probably didn't have the time to bother with all those extra faces that they would need for this.

it may not have been time... Loaf told me that the ending movie was cut short, it was originally going to show the steltek, but it was cut as it would require another floppy disk.

There's lots cut from every game.. Things like the Leech Missile are present on the Prophecy disc (they look like really cool neon yellow flurries), but were never implemented in the game.

Leeches in Prophecy? THAT is like to see (no, seriously!)
Then again, i cant think of any uses for them in the game....

BTW, Darkmage, any idea what bars they are found in (if they were in-game) and who said them?

Here it is..

Uses for Leech missiles? Well, despite the longer lock time, a Leech missile is a one-hit kill against any enemy fighter. That is convenient, considering that only the multi-missiles (Swarmer, Tracker), and the dumbfires can kill anything heavier than a Moray in one shot except on Rookie level.

I'm not sure how they would have functioned in Prophecy, but they're not always one-shot kills. In Academy and Armada they're merely energy suckers.

Well in WC 3/4, they drain progressively MORE energy until the target is dead in space. Hit a Vaktoth, Pakhtan, or even a Sothark with one, and it will lose all maneuvering ability after a number of seconds.

In WC4 they took a certain amount of the ship's "energy" instantly and permanently. In most cases, this disabled ships with one hit.

Hmmm. Maybe, but to my knowledge nothing smaller than the Sothark was still able to fight after a direct hit with a Leech in WC3 or 4.

In WC IV I prefered to use Leech Missiles and Guns against Confed Ship, even though I was fighting for the Border Worlds. Confed were still my own people

ChrisReid, how can we use somehow these Leech Missles in Prophecy ??

How did you get the pic ??

Hmmm, maybe someone wanted to capture some alien technology at some point... eg. the retreive beacon mission

Also, what about tractor beams? They would have come in handy... (if you can haul those new big friggin ejector pods... too wimpy for the seats i guess...)

Interesting look for a leech missile. I thought it was just another gun blast. Isn't HCl trying to implement some sort of leech gun in SO?

The Leech is not actually available for play in the game. I think Hades gave me the picture.
