Unboxing Goes Retro With WC1 Review (August 27, 2015)

Unboxing videos are everywhere these days, and it's a shame that this trend arrived after the decline of physical video game packages. Most games are downloaded digitally now, and there just aren't all that many awesome collector's editions anymore. Sometimes Youtubers just need to look back into the past for cool games to open up. 298enterprise recently went back and reviewed the contents of the original Wing Commander. He naturally finds Claw Marks and the awesome blueprints, and he even spends quite a bit of time on the cardboard exterior. The clip isn't the slickest technical production and sometimes things move a bit quickly right in front of the camera, but it's great to see someone doing this with the WC series.

To be fair: you can still get a digital Collector's edition of some games that come with extras like the soundtrack, etc.

Yeah, that's the thing. The irony is that there actually more "collector's editions" now than ever before. It seems like almost every high profile game has a more expensive version that comes with odds and ends like a digital soundtrack download or colored gun skins or whatever, but they're more a way to squeeze $20 extra out of you than anything truly collectible (a more palatable way to upsell people than preorder bonuses). About the only thing that I have been impressed by in the last few years are the statues. There have been some quite nice ones lately for the last few Halo and Gears of Wars games. The Titanfall collectors edition came with a giant 18" robot that's very impressive.
