Toughest ace to beat in WC (any)

Dix

Spaceman
Just curious as to which ace people found the hardest to kill in the WC games..

For myself, it'd have to be hobbes in WC3, right after he kills cobra - i could never kill that guy unless i was in the excalibur..

Come to think of it, I really dont know either.
All the aces in the WC games I played I have been able to take down
Im really not sure. I have to go over the game again I think

It was not really fighting against an ace, but that simulator battle against Flash in Wing 3 was pretty tough if you were playing an Ace or higher. I remember having to load up several save games so I could keep him as a combat pilot.

Yeah, not just Flash in particular but I found all simulated battles to be tougher than when I actually had to fight an ace pilot. Wierd.

Seether in WC4, and also jazz in so2, jazz, was defaulted by my PC, could not set the level, seether i fought at ace level.

i have to say, it was on my first attempt through and i made it, fighting seether without a ny ordnance and he had a full missile load-out.

it was a hard fight, took everything i had left in a damaged fighter after playing it since it at was 20 hours aftter i bought it and 20 minutes after i bought it it was installing on my 486, and plaed it through overnight..(bought it on friday)

All these refer to Nightmare difficulty setting: I found it tough to defeat Bloodmist when you're trying to defend Blackmane. In order to save the Blackmane, I had to replay the mission a few times before I realized that you have to take out his wingmen first or they'll torp the base while you're going after Bloodmist. The WC3 Darket ace was tough to beat because it's the last navpoint and if you're not prepared to meet him, you might be out of missiles and afterburners, and you have to face him and a bunch of his wingmen (6 I think?). Beating Maniac was a challenge in WC4 because my joystick is off center which makes it very hard to aim the guns- and you can't use missiles. I don't have a problem beating Hobbes or any ace for that matter 1v1 (Seether can be annoying because you have to wait until he uncloaks- Flash is about impossible to beat if you miss with all your missiles [I made the mistake of firing the missiles from a distance against him when I was new to nightmare level]). If you don't go after Hobbes the first time it's tough to face him, Thrakath, and their wingmen all at the same time by yourself. I used up most of my missiles and afterburners fighting them- but fortunately I found that you can follow the trench all the way to the target without being detected.

I had a similar problem with my joystick in WC4, I would tap it over to center on the target and it would float in random directions. I had to constantly correct it before I fired.

Hobbes in his T-bolt when you chase after him, The only tactic that worked without me taking damage was just flying up point blank and hitting him with missles (it just felt like a cheap kill). Against Flash all u had to do was play the waiting game because eventually he ran out of missles and afterburners. The Maniac duel in WC4was pretty good as well because you had to beat him or at least best him within a set time limit!

That's the best tactic to use in the games. I don't think it's a cheap kill, it takes great flying skill to maneuver that close to the enemy's tail while holding lock. It's easy in the WC games only because the AI is weak. If the AI was programed to hold a turn or a loop, or other appropriate maneuvers, I think it would be extremely challenging to use that tactic. I would've liked it if the simulator had a difficulty setting where you could choose to dogfight enemies of different skill levels, and have the computer compute the appropriate maneuver in much the same way that Chessmaster9000 and other chess programs find the appropriate chess move based upon the skill setting you input. That would've been fun if they put a "grandmaster" (grandmaster=highest title for a chess player) rated ace that you can choose to fight or not in order to give WC players the ultimate challenge, as well as ratings for other aces on the simulator so that WC players could know how our flying skills measure up. Likewise, they could also input creative maneuvers to give pilots different flying styles. It could also show us how talented the wingmen we choose to fly with are if Confed gave them a "rating" based upon Confed simulators. Maybe it's better if we don't know the rating so that we're choosing our wingmen based upon how much we like the characters more than their flying skill, but since WCIV gave them ratings anyway (still not sure how accurate they are) at least we could have a more accurate way to know where each stands, and who the real "top guns" are. I wouldn't be surprised if this is in the cards for future combat sims.

By the way, for the Maniac engagement in WC4, there is a kind of cheat. Since the AI flies in formation, you just come to a stop, and turn to face him. The second you accept the challenge, ping his shields and give chase. You probably won't kill him, but as long as he doesn't hit you in return the little bit of damage you get from that sneak attack is enough to rule you/Blair as the winner of the timed engagement.

There's also a little bit of a joke you can play on Seether, in the engagement in Sol system. After he taunts you, but before he actually attacks, if you hit autoslide and turn around (so you're flying backwards), when he does start he'll appear behind you... and run right into your rear, destroying his ship. You'll take some damage, yes, but he'll be outright destroyed. If you fly through the defending Arrows around Earth itself while cloaked, you won't be attacked, which will keep your damaged ship safe till the atmospheric entry cutscene kicks in and takes you to the final conflict of the game.

That Salthi ace in WC1 would run from me and I could never catch the little sucker.

I am all with you on that one. Most certainly not the most dangerous cat, but the hardest one to down.

Kur was very very tough, much more so on the first time through. The fact that he's got three wingmen in Grikhaths (I think?) and he has a neutron turret complicates things considerably. I've never been able to go through that mission with no damage...

Yeah, the Salthi Ace, Bhurak Starkiller if I'm not mistaken, would seem to run quite often. I'd save my missiles for when he ran though and nail him. The good thing is if you miss him the first time you get another crack at him later.

I must have got really lucky with Kur as I don't remember him being very tough. I remember beating him by flying really close to him and firing both the rapier's dumbfires at him at almost point blank range.

The hardest ace had to be Stalker since he seemed to have the power to resurrect himself... that was until I figured out you had to send your wingman back to base first before destroying him. In terms of flying skill, the best ace was probably Hobbes with his thunderbolt. His ship had your hellcat outgunned and you had to be careful not to wander too close to his rear turret. I had to wait for him to come at me and then blast him with full guns as he turned away.

Ironically, Thrakhath is a kilrathi prince and supposedly the most deadly pilot they have, yet he had to be the easiest ace of all of them in WC3. It must have had something to do with the fact that you face him with a cloaked excalibur ;). I thought it was funny when you were cloaked sitting right behind him and he replied to my taunts by saying, "ah, I have you now, I am on your tail." What an idiot, I was the one on his tail.

I really hate the kur mission, isn't it the one where you fly with hobbes ona rapier? It is really hard, lots of powerfull enemy fighters.

And bhurak ALWAYS runs, the bitch.

I think the hardest had to be Hobbes, well for me at least. His turret kept on tearing my shields and he could whip me when I was attempting to dodge him. After a couple of replays, I was able to whittle him down, but finally solved the problem by ramming into him when he almost dead, I spared myself further comment also in the final mission and rammed through Prince Thrakkath and happily continued to Kilrah.

Bloodmist was pretty tough too, but I found a solution by sicking my wingman on him while I thumped his escorts and rammed him near death.

Ramming an ace is one of my favorite solutions!

The Paktahn ace in WCIII always gave me some trouble because of that damned rear turrett. The "regular" Paktahns weren't too bad but that one guy use to do a lot of pain in the ass maneuvers.
