Tolwyn : The Pilot ?!!!

Oggy

Rear Admiral
I Just watched one of the wing commander academy tv episodes, the walking wounded, i was gob smacked to see Tolwyn flying a fighter in defence of the Tigers Claw!!! especially since he was the commodore (is that like the Captain or something, he seems to be in command), is this unusual or did he do it regularly (I haven't read any of the books) if so, what was his call-sign (the pilots he was flying with just called him Commodore)

BTW loved his line
"I can't lose this beastly furball" :D

(p.s. in WC I was Colonel Halycon in command of the Tigers Claw, or was he just the CAG or wing commander etc.)

According to the novel Action Stations, Tolwyn started his career as a pilot, as is necessary for those who go on to command carriers in today's navy. Although it may have shown him flying in Walking Wounded, that would be highly unlikely for the commander of a battlegroup, which is what a commodore is, the lowest grade of admiral. However, it has been some time since I saw the episode, so I can't remember the rationale.

Halc was the Wing Commander, in charge of the Tiger's Claw's fighter wing. Captain Thorn commanded the Tiger's Claw until he was relieved by Tolwyn, apparently on charges of cowardice, which Blair believed to be bogus.

Hmmm......so the conspiracy of tollwyn goes back farther than expected........;)

Hardly. Tolwyn is known for walking on board and taking over. Remember the Victory? And I'm sure he did the same with the Vesuvius, since no Admiral of his standing and history would demean himself to measly carrier command, no matter the size of the carrier.

IIRC, Halcyon commanded the Tiger's Claw during SM1.
I don't think so. He worked on the bridge at times, I think - he wasn't a 'flying' WC like Blair on the Victory. He was 'promoted' to Tactical division in SM2, and promoted Blair to WC in turn.

I don't know where I remember that from but it's definately in my mind (which may be a bit over-loaded). But I wouldn't trust my memory any further than I can spit. ;)

Tolwyn was captain of Concordia for quite a number of years.

Halcyon commanded Tiger's Claw in SM1, for lack of a better commander -- Thorn had been sent away by Tolwyn, and Tolwyn had gone on to better things. Thorn came back when Tiger's Claw got back to human space.

Commodore isn't a flag rank I recall, more akin to Brigadier (formerly Brigadier General)...in fact, I don;t believe it's a rank at all. More of an honorific used for captains commanding a squadron.

Yikes, poor guy. Thor's Hammer was a tough operation. Did the dialogue actually explicitly state he was the captain? I must admit my memory of SM1 is already becoming hazy.

Yikes, I remember that line. :)

But I meant explicitly as in "Hello pilots, I am now (acting) captain of the Tiger's Claw. Yipee for me." :)

Um, yeah? :(

I was refering to the US Navy though.

Well, Wing Commander isn't the US Navy.

But, you're right anyway, IIRC. I think there're two types of Rear-Admirals, but no Commodore.

EDIT: Yup there's Rear-Admiral (Lower Half... O-7) and Rear-Admiral (Upper Half... O-8).

I checked. :D

Well if he's in command, doesn't that make him the captain?

I'm a pilot. I fly. Please do not be offended by my sexy man voice.

But I can still be offended by your presence and your smell? Okay. :p
