The evolving mass driver

See, in the first WC the mass driver has this bouncing ball noise that's all punchy and reverberating. Then in WC2, it sounds more metallic and twangy. Then in WC3 I'd say it sounded kind of echoey and Dennis. WC4 was obviously more sophisticated with its multi-layered sound and true metal noises. WC5's mass driver sounded a little more electrical and discharged. I'd say my favorite mass driver was the one from WC1. I remember the first time I fired the Scimitar and suddenly gray bouncy bullets starting coming out. That was pretty amazing for me because I had to learn to play the game without the manual and took me several weeks until I learned how to land on the Tiger's Claw again. So I had only just started to move up in the game. That was way back in 1990. So cool!

Who said dense? I said Dennis.

I forgot to mention the mass driver from Privateer. It sounded more like a regular gun. But it was hardly effective against anything. I remember the mass driver from Privateer 2. That was like the most uncharacteristic of any mass driver I remember. Egad, wasn't Privateer 2 strange? It was so unlike anything Wing Commander at all. It was all British acting and spelling too. Like civilisation instead of civilization. Stuff like that. I liked how strange it was though. Lev Arris was kind of a cool character. But I liked his supposed twin brother too. He was all, "Leave the light on mommy. Leave the light on...." Anyway, that's all I got to say on that for now.

And it had Christopher Walken and John Hurt in it! Therefore, it had to have been cool. No, seriously, it was a cool game. Well, cool in an English, saturday night, B-movie kind of way.

that charging mass made it easy indeed. power it up to the max, wait for the moment and let it rip. you could take down a moray wit a single shot or a damaged manta

I didn't really use it that much...kinda of the same with the secondary guns on fighters in wc4...they were cool but I didn't have a big use for them all the time in battle...

I primarily used the scatter gun in WC4 when in a Banshee, seemed to be so much more effective than the 4 lasers.

The mass driver in P1/RF was quite inferior by itself, but chain 3 on a ship (Broadsword) and have 5 ships comming at ya, the mass drivers combined like that were formidable.

In Priv and RF i found that the mass drivers were a very important entry level gun. Man just think the game would have you launch into space right away with a single laser! Yikes! I would hate to run into a group of talons with only a pea shooter to let them have it with. I think back to the intro scen and how your character kills a talon on the first pass with one laser psssht! whatever! Anyways i found that you should sell your laser and missle launcher and upgrade to mass drivers and a torpedo launcher to start things off.

I always liked the mass drivers in wc2, broadsword definately shows their potential. however they do kinda suck in priv, I always prefered 4 tachs on my centurion.

I only used the scatter gun on bigger targets, mostly capships

On WC3 the mass drivers have a good damage/energy ratio, but they are only used on the turrets of the t-bolts and not much else.

Yeah they seem to be almost forgotten in wc3...it's kinda too bad...although the weapons on the longbow are a nice step up from the broadsword...although a bit power hungry...

That's true, I missed the Mass Drivers in WC3 too, especially since I first only got the German version where they called them "Magnet guns" - don't know why, in the previous German versions they just translated Mass Driver (Massetreiber) and it was fine. But the WC3 Mass drivers didn't even feel like Mass Drivers to me, being so pointy. :)
Although they reappeared in WC4 on the Avenger, only with WCP's Mass Drivers was I reconcilliated (ergh, spelling?) again. But I do miss also the Neuttron Guns why did they have to be retired from service, sniff.
And I'd like to know their damage potential in WC3, since the WC3 manual doesn't list them. If it's really 30 as the KS manual states (IIRC) then they're quite useless. The WC1/2 guide says they dave 25% more damage potential than the Mass Driver.

The Mass Driver revival on WCP was kind of cool, too bad it didn't make it to WCP (at least on player ships - anyone up for a black tigershark?)

Sorry if this was already spoken elsewhere, but will they be standard WCP mass drivers, or modified? And what about the good old stormfire, the BW-Fanboy weapon of choice? :)

stormfires would be nice for anti-torp defense as they kind of remind me of the flechette rounds that get mentioned in the books a lot. I just can't wait to see ships with their new big guns blasting out into space with lasers, mass drivers, neutron and AMG rounds....
