Stroll Down Memory Lane

ok folks tell me about the first time you jumped in the cockpit and went after the kilrathi.
well for me it was:
the summer of '95, I wasnt even computer literate and never had the urge to buy one, i started hangin out with this guy Greg, i used to go to his house and played d & d with his three brothers and father, every now and then thru my visits his brother chris would get on the computer and play WC2 on his 486 at first it didnt appeal to me, but one day he asked me if i wanted to play, when i first tried it was too difficult, i wasnt really good with the keys and which ones to push, after a few missions i thought of it kind of a so-so game, he had all the other classics too, "rise of the triad","heretic", about a year later he moved to louisiana

early '97 (long enough time to forget about WC) my friend Joe (someone i had met thru greg and had played D&D with) had just bought a 3DO and was playing WC3 when i came to his house one day. i got so hooked playing it i kept going to his house to play war games with him with some other comrades (axis and allies the board game version) and other WW2 genre games, and the whole time i just couldnt wait to finish and jump on his 3DO.

a year later i finally moved out of my parents house, moved in with this guy i went to raves with ,Jeff. i gotta hold of this computer from my father, before i moved out.
when i had gotten the computer i wanted to play games on it of course, all i could think was getting WC. so i went to this used computer game store and there it was wing commander, for six bucks, they also had wc2 hip hip horray !!! i went home installed it and played practically all nite.
well years have gone buy and every time i play WC all i can think of was the first i played at Gregs house. the good old days
the rest is history!

We had a thread like this about 8 months ago, but who cares. My first experience: I was in 3rd grade and on the bus the only cool kid was this one 8th grader. I started talking to him...we had a lot in common: Star Wars, computers, Supertones, and soon to be WC. We actually are still pretty good friends, he's a sohpmore in College right now, and one of my best friends is his brother who is 23, but anway. He started talking to me about a little game called Wing Commander. From the name of it it sounded awesome. So one day, he came over my house and brought over the Kilrathi Saga. When I saw the claw on the jewel case, I was salivating. On my then kick butt computer, he popped the disc in and showed me the Kilrathi Saga trailer, oh pure bliss. Then he got WC3 running. My friends, we had the lights turned off and my trusty 17" Trinitron shown like a beacon. Seeing Kilrah come to life, seeing Blair and Paladin (both being two of my most respected actors) look on at the sinking Concordia (I think). Blair being sent to the Victory, and I was thinking, this is just the intro video. That day pioneered the way I play games (well not really). It was magical. That Friday I picked up my trusty Microsoft Sidewinder Precision PRo which I still use today and works like a dream. After I played through the Kilrathi Saga, my friend gave me WCIV (I had lucky, I was playing the, when they were all released and he also had them all), which had even a bigger impression. I cranked up my Altec Lancing's for the intro Dolby Surround, even though my card didn't support it. That remains even to today my most beloved game. Then after I was finished with WCIV, my friend gave me Prophecy. I loved it, and still do, but it left me kind of empty, like they spent more time on perfecting the graphics engine than on story quality. But it didn't stop there. I got Privateer, downloaded WCATV, became a member of the CIC and now you find me here writing this post. In the past 5 years, it has been an amazing adventure. Thanks Chris Roberts for the ride.

I honestly don't remember. I was very young when I first got into Wing Commander. I am almost completely sure that my first Wing Commander game was Wing Commander 2... I was 7 or 8 when it was first released. I sorta grew up on it per se... which makes me such a Wing Commander junkie that I still prefer Wing Commander in the light of Freespace and *Lancer and all those other space combat games out right now.

I just posted this yesterday on my thread, but oh well.

It was my 8th birthday, and my dad presented me with a present. It was an Origin game pack thingy, my three favorite games of all time were in it; Shockwave Assault, Crusader: No Remorse, and Wing Commander 3. I started playing Crusader first, cause I thought it was cool. It was and am still playing today. Then I went onto Shockwave Assault, I beat that in a few days. I didn't play WC 3 much, 'cause I was terrible at it. I then started playing it just last year for the first time in like four years. I found this site and been here ever since!

I dont really remember when I first played it ether but I was around the age of 10 and I remeber getting WC1 when are local Costco opened up. It was my first flight sim and I never even heard of them before I came across this game . I was hooked on it even when I really didnt even know what I was doing and I was basicly flying around shooting whatever I chould find :D

It's been about a year ago. There was a relative of mine who passed away, and then when I first got to know my cousin Ario. Quite like me he was quite hooked up with computers, sci-fi and Star Trek. Unlike me his computer was far more advance: AT 286 or 386 perhaps... Windows operating system. Back when I was still with an 286 with a simple VGA monitor playing with old DOS games... even my floppy drive was only a 5.25" double densitiy drive.

And Ario was showing me WC2... and it was the first time I saw Wing Commander, the feline alien races... and I was really fascinated hearing the true speech. Sound cards was quite a novelty then, and I haven't heard much of a true speech on a computer before. (The next time I heard speech was from the game Star Control II, when the Pkunk were trading insults with the enemies). Well... I think it was 1992 or 1993 then, and I even hadn't played the game yet.

A year of so later there was a 3DO presentation at a mall nearby, and they were showing Super Wing Commander on a very large screen (or was it a set of put together television sets?). I don't remember seeing anyone playing it yet.

And I first got into the universe in 1994, when I purchased a copy of WC2 and installed it at my cousin's (not Ario) home. We played for hours... and were quickly to hook into Wing Commander.

It's really a long time ago!

How I got into WC...

Back in secondary modern school, when I didn't have a PC, I always heard my buddies praising Wing Commander but it didn't really interest me at that time.

I started with the Prophecy demo in '97. The first time I played it, I was struck how awesome the new 3d accelerator graphics were.
Later, I bought full WCP after it was rereleased. Then I saw the Kilrathi in the simulator and thought, "Man that are real badass aliens- they are cool!". I tried to find the other WC games and found WC4 in a game compilation box together with KKND and Hattrick. Since then I'm hooked and try to get every WC available.
But since '98, after Ibought Privateer2, I didn't get any new WC, and I didn't wanted to pay so much money on them, like on eBay.
Fortunately for me, my friend lost interest in WC(how can that be? ). Then, he sold me WC1, WC2, WC3, Priv and Armada very cheap, just a few months ago. The only game I do not own is Academy. I'm sooo happy!

The only bad thing is that they are all the old DOS versions, I can't get WC1 and WC2 to run properly.

How I learned about WC?

In '95 or '96 (I think - I was 9 or so at the time) I was digging around through the storied Huge-Boxes-Of-Programs in our basement. I dug out a CD with WCI and it's two expansions on it. Naturally, I was curious (I thought it was a flight sim ...) and I popped it in my old 486. I was hooked. Then, Murphy's Law struck, and my long-haired calico "attacked" the computer ... so many zapped components ... my dad let me on his PC, a Pentium of some sort. I then learned the new flight tactic "How to die before you can blink!" Ticked off ...

Getting Prophecy was interesting. I played a Freespace 2 demo from a PCGamer CD, and went into the store to buy it. Somehow (don't ask ...) I got it confused with Prophecy ... after a while, the PCGamer with the "12 Classic Games" CD came, and I fired up WC - and proceeded to be utterly annihalated ... and it's gone from there ... looking for III and IV ... bought II from a used PC shop ...

Hi folks,

I've recently discovered this forum and have been reading it for a while. When I saw the thread, I couldn't resist anymore, so I joined!

The first time I played WC was, when I was in high school. This dude in my class had recently bought a brand new PC (was it 386, I can't remember) for like 5K dollars. I only had a tiny Amiga 500 for myself. He was telling us about this brand new game, WC. How wonderful its graphics are, how nice the game play is etc.

Me and other guys were sooo jealous. Anyway, about 3 months later, I was WC in the shelfs of my local game shop. And it was for Amiga. I immidiately bought it. And played, like a week or so without any break. I still remember, when you fire the cannons, silver round thingies were flying towards your target (cool 2D effect for those times ).

I also remember, later in the game, when there were big number of fighters killing each other + some cap ships firing, the graphics turning to "slide show" mode. But I kinda enjoyed it. Since the game was slowing, you could actually aim better (sort of a "bullet time", as in Matrix). My every single shot was hitting the target

Well, well. The good old times...

I started with WC1, back in '93 or '94. A friend of mine bought this new game. The box looked cool, but we couldn't get it to run. I offered to try it on my computer, and when it managed to work we had a fun time. Then I bought WC3, and was amazed even more. Now I own 2 - 4 and the KS version that came in the PC Gamer subscription I have. I also think I have most of not all of the spin-offs, and the 'special' WC4 DVD. It is by-far the most memorable series I've ever played. The only thing that has come close to the immersion level, for me, is Deus Ex. Then again I'm probably heavily biased since WC1 was my first omputer game aside from tetris and solitair.

It was '96 or so, and I got WC3 as part of a pkg deal on games at Media Play.

Two words come to mind:

Total Immersion.

(or as close to it as I've ever come).

My first WC game was WC2... Although I got it after WC3 was out.

I remember Kilrathi Saga in a video game store back when i was strolling around as a youngun before I had my first PC (I had a C64 and a Nintendo back then)... I thought the game was so cool - I even have vague memories of a WC3 release but I wasn't too interested in PC games obviously. Then I got my first PC, and along with the soundcard package there came a box set of games...

Strike Commander was my instant fav... I LOVE that game, it's still my favorite and I'll give 100 bucks to anyone who can make it run on WinME... And when I had finished it and Tacops I was looing around for something else to play. WC2.

I remember having attempted to install WC2 before but gave up due to some minor issue... This time I solved it and started playing, and obviously I didn't like it as much as SC but what struck me was the feasibility of the game universe. As an astronomy interested kid WC was such a welcome alternative to Star Wars, Star Trek and other utterly unrealistic shows. WC looked worn, human... It looked real. So I was hooked to the WC universe long before I ever liked the game. All that changed when I picked up WC4 :)

I know what you mean.

I was 7, and we had owned a 486 computer for a couple months when my dad bought a speaker/sound card package which also contained a joystick and about 15 games. One of those was Wing Commander 2 Deluxe edition (with SO1/SO2). Just the cover art made me want to open it up-those Drakhri blowing up the Concorida...

I loved that game, the feeling like I was a character in a real war. Within a few weeks, I was able to find WC1 in a bargain bin, as well as Secret Missions 1/2. For Christmas a few years later, I got WC3 and 4 (one from the grandparents on each side of the family). WC3 was simply phenomenal, and WC4 was just as good, if not a little better. Bought Prophecy in 98 for 20 bucks, and even though I missed the full imersion from the last 2 games, I still loved it.

Okay, fine, I had a similar situation to SabreAce. I'm pretty sure I was still in primary school, probably about 1992, Dad bought a SB16 + CD-ROM package with a whole load of games and other software included. WC2 Deluxe was in that - and that's where it all began. :)

When wc1 first came out my cousins got it for their computer (and eventualy got sm1). We would play it at their house, never paying much attention to the story. Sometimes though we would eject every mission just so we could see all the different cut scene animations... Some years later, i'm not sure why, I convinced one of my cousins to buy wc2 deluxe cd. Eventually I borrowed it and copied it onto my hard drive, played it... and fell completely in love.

Partly from dealing with a brother who would delete my games because he's a bit of a bully and would delete my games to spite me, it actualy took a long time before I had acctually played through all of SO1 and SO2. ( I've finished the main part of wc2 a couple of times.)

Soom after WC3 came out... my computer sucked (386 16mhz).:( So a little more convincing and my cousin bought WC3 and we would spend many evenings and weekends playing it. Now he was hooked too. Eventually he got WC4 as well,
THen I picked up Privateer gold edition CD. Then we Finally had a good computer And I bought Prophecy and downloaded Secretops. (My cousin had gotten P2 as well but it would be a while before I would acctualy play through it) We also bought a DVD rom and it came with WC4 DVD edition.

At one point I was having trouble with a certain WCP mission where (for me) it wasn't evident how to change nav points since you had to do it manualy. So I logged onto the net found a message board, and news that there was a WC movie comming out. I posted a bunch (that may have had something to do with being stuck at home for the summer in a cast) back in the days of WCHS (CIC's forerunner) and have been visiting these parts ever since! :) (granted lately I've been doing more reading than posting... )

Just recently I discovered my cousin had the PC gamer disk with the Kilrathi Saga version of WC1 so I borrowed it... downloaded SM1 + 2 and was Finally able to experience the whole thing...
