True, but I always got the impression of the derelict as being 'old' (as in obsolete) technology for the steltek. As in they moved beyond needing a cockpit - whether melding with their tech (cyborg), fused with it, became energy beings or what have you.
 
I suddenly want to draw a cyborg-snail. Like a huge snail assimilated by the Borg or something.
Too bad I suck at drawing....

Yeah... a snail...

I don't refute that they use cockpits. It's obviously in enough open space to have a camera pointed at its beak thing. I'm merely suggesting they're space blobs, developed beyond the need for cool things like appendages and sitting upright.
