speech in privateer

teegees

Spaceman
i seem to recall all dialogue being spoken. but this was years ago on the cd version. my copy of which is to scratched to use anymore. so i'm playing the version i downloaded from the-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(all 3 parts priv, rf, speech pack) via dosbox.

the speech worked in the intro movie but once i entered the first base all the characters were subtitled. am i remembering things wrong? or did the cd version have more to it? the main data files are 5 or 6 times larger on the cd version.

or did i perhaps install the speech pack wrong? it came with two files but no instructions. so i just copied the two files(speech.exe and .pak) to the \privater directory. then i ran speech.exe which just had me configure the sound devices again.

someone set me straight please. i cant enjoy the game if i think part of the experience is missing. thanks.

You should definately be hearing everyone talking. Bartender and all. I don't know what the technical problem is though. I'd like to see the guy's face who did the bartender and shipdealer voices. I bet he looked just how he did in the game.

Nope you shouldn't. That is the difference between the disk version+speech pack and the CD release. You only get speech in space for the disk version (and in the intro).

I've known friends who really abuse their CDs and make them look more like scouring pads than mirrors, but my CDs are all almost completely scratchless, even from many years ago. I guess I'm just a freak...

Mine look good too.
I really liked listening to the bartenders.
But sometimes the non-speech version has some more customized parts, alike when you try to buy a ship that's too expensive for you, the guy actally states how short you are of the ship's price.

Mine are all in good shape as well

and to the orginally poster...why not try buying a cd copy of it...I mean how expensive can it be?

If you've only tried the disk version, get the CD - the full speech is awesome!

If you've only done the CD version and you're bored, try the disk version - Brownhair has a much cooler voice in the intro sequence. :)

Bored? With Privateer? Bull. I still can't get it to run on my machine, and it burns me up. I can't get Armada to run either. This makes me angry.

look around for a 486 or pentium 60/120 class machine with a good sound card.

probably you can take one home for free, or maybe 10-15$?
