Space Sim MMO

as to system reqments....

I'm running a p4 intel 2.4 2 gigs ddr with a old trusty ati 9800 256meg ddr vid card. with 6-16meg cable internet connecting. there does seem to be some lag but nothen that bad, atlest nothen that coused me to die yet. (not that I haven't died a few times just not from lag).

Yeah i'm guessing my machine wouldn't be able to handle it if your system is suffering from a bit of lag. I'm not sure thats the cause of the problem I've run into, but it has convinced me that attempting to fix the problem would probably be an excersice in futility.

You probably just need to upgrade your graphics card. The prices has really come down enough that you can get a fairly good one for around $80.

Did you get the game installed, and then have problems? Or did you have problems with the game after it was installed? I had some problems with the installer, initially.

I downloaded it, and ran the setup no problem. When i got to start the program a dos box pops up for a second then the screen goes black and my courser changes, like its booting up... then my screen goes back to my desktop. No error message or anything, just stops.

You guys do realize that MMOs and full voice acting do not go together, right?

Well, I don't know if you ever played Earth and Beyound from EA but atlest at the start most of the main NPC had speach. I am not saying having everyword in spoken speach but say if you mean a villian...Darth Vader for example, hearing his voice atlest when you first meet him makes it well much more well I feel like I am realy in thes world. In Guild Wars, what they do is intersting. After you fin a mission from the main story theres a cut sceen where they have your PC speaken to the NPCs....and its Generated on the fly just for you and who ever is with you.

And who wants to spend there whole time playing while they make you read page after page of txt........ I liked Morrwind for example but I almost never read any of the books as some where as large as real one..

and one last thing, I think games have reach the point in tech wethor online/off MMOs or other type that they all should have speech in them in someform there is no excuse not too. I don't know about you, but when I spend about 3k on my last pc upgrade I want games that really push the limits of the tech not just the graphics but other things.

I'm talking about FULL speech. That just won't happen, because it would be really stupid. I've played WoW, City of Heroes, Guild Wars and a bit of LotRO and Ragnarok Online (ugh)... They all might have a bit of quest voice acting in the very beginning, but any MMORPG worthy of the name will have literally thousands of quests and questgivers. Not only that would require ridiculous amounts of disk space, probably at least 5 BD-Rom disks, but it would also demand a gargantuan amount of recording time and VA actors and so on. Not to mention that taking a quick glance at the quest objectives and moving on is really a trillion times more efficient than listening to the whole fluff speech. In my WoW time, I wouldn't even read most of the quest text, just turned on the "quest objectives on screen" thing and followed them. I only read the fluff when it offered some more info about the quest.

Anyway, Taikodom is NOT a Blizzard or EA game with endless budget. Those guys have already done a lot with limited resources, and I'm sure they'll implement as much VA as it can be done.

Reading text for quests is par for the course in MMO's. IT will be so for a long, long time. Even if they implement voice (or more voice) in Taikodom, it won't ever have full VA.

And seriously, your last paragraph is really just silly. Boo hoo hoo I'm entitled to this and that because I spent moneys on a computer. yeah.

Sorry for going stealth mode, but I had some planning to do for the next version. ;)

Ok, first about not been able to run the game. When it simply goes black when you try to run the games, its most probably the 3D card software. Just download and run an update from your card's manufacturer and it should fix the problem. We had someone yesterday complaining about that just to find out his 3D card software was dated january 2004.

If thats not the problem or that doesnt fix it, you can ask for our support at http://portal.taikodom.com/?locale=en

On shooting asteroids for a living, believe me that is not what we want, but its what is necessary for the moment. Why? Because several features (like fluctuating economy, progression and dynamic content) has not been implemented yet. The way it works (shooting and "looting" them) is also temporary, as the rules for mining equipment enters soon (also related with progression and dynamic content). Does that means that its yet to be done? No. It means that, since it depends on other features, it was pushed back on the implementation timetable. There are rules, there are some features, but including it now would "break" other features.

There will be PVP areas? The plan is for the other way around. That means, some areas are totally secured, like city centers. Some are patrolled by NPC ships (there is a little of that now, but due to other features, they don't react to piracy, just in self defense or when someone branded "enemy" shows up) and there are unsafe areas, where piracy is high and you better hire some escort to do your trading. Effectively, the farther you get from "civilization", more dangerous it gets. Plays can expand this "area of protection" as they want.

As always, remember the game is under development, so new features will appear and some today are just place-holders (like firing at asteroids). As Edmo said, Hoplon has gone a long way to get here. As you might know, Brazil doesnt have a game development background, both as know-how as a cultural thing. Believe me, people here still consider it hard to understand that you actually work on the game industry and that it is a serious business.

There is also a serious lack of trained and experienced people in Brazil, even though we got some of the most talented people available. Which is why the company took a few years of learning before it got where it is now. Is that an excuse? Not at all. We wouldn't be here if we didn't believe we can deliver an excellent AAA game. But its a little background for those of you used a gaming industries of 30+ years ;)

And an addendum to what Loaf just posted, recording VA is just the tip of the iceberg. First that it demands actors for it, which means money. Second, it means a larger game file, which means larger downloads (especially at updates). Third, recording it without the proper equipment is not good enough for a commercial release (believe me, I have worked with online learning for years). Fourth, it means multilingual, as the game will be not just English, but Portuguese and later as many languages as necessary (spanish and mandarin are already been studied), so 3+ recordings, files sizes, etc.

After all that, it means implementing the feature.

Does it means no voice at all? Not necessarily. But its what we got at this moment.

The new Eve Online expansion accidentally nukes system files on some computers.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183718.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;15

The expansion, Eve Online Trinity, overhauled the game's graphics engine, and added new ships, stations, and stargates as well. For some users, it also deleted a crucial file on their computers, preventing them from booting up.

According to a CCP developer posting on the game's official forums, Trinity was deleting the boot.ini files of many Windows XP users who upgraded from the game's old client to its new client. The boot.ini file determines Windows' operating system options during startup, and the computer cannot start normally without it. A computer with a missing or corrupted boot.ini file is not permanently broken, but it does require some proficiency to repair or replace it.
