Sneak EPK (August 11, 2010)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
An Electronic Press Kit (EPK) is a tape sent to television stations and other multimedia outlets put together to make producing a story on your product easier--they include stock interviews with cast members, film footage that can be narrated over, trailers and other background material. We've digitized a new copy of the 45-minute Wing Commander movie EPK for anyone interested in seeing interviews with Chris Roberts and Freddie Prinze Jr. or a copy of the movie's b-roll.

Small parts of this was released some time ago (my local copy is dated 2003), it's nice that we have the whole thing now, and in higher resolution. Thanks.

I believe we posted the whole thing years ago (in much lower quality)--but at the time we didn't have the bandwidth/storage space to have more than one segment online at a time!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of, but I couldn't find the original news post. I might not have had the download capacity to take the bigger files either, I only had some of the parts.

Like I said, nice to see the whole package now. (:

You're probably thinking of this series of updates. I remembered it because parts 4 and 7 are on the list of files that have gone missing over the years. The oldest reference I can find to a press kit tape is from March 1999.

Since you mentioned storage and bandwidth limitations... here's a fun quote from 1999:

It's pretty big, eight megabytes, but this is not one to miss. You need RealPlayer to listen to it. Also, to prevent any slowdown to the main CIC server, our friends at KillerBees are mirroring it.

Yesterday we put up close to ten gigabytes of new downloads.

I actually bought this tape on eBay in March, 1999--it cost just over $100 (with a press kit, a shirt and a movie poster), which was a heck of a lot for someone in high school. I remember it very well because I was suddenly out of town when the auction ended (for the WC movie premiere!) and was horrified that I couldn't get to my e-mail to find the woman's address to mail her payment. She was really nice about it in the end and sent me a Star Wars poster for tree (which I still have rolled up somewhere).

I believe the Origin Museum has a BETA version of the same tape, which is probably higher quality... but you need some fancy equipment to play it.

I must have recorded the original versions with my "ATI All-in-Wonder" video card, which was a heck of a lot of work to keep alive.

Yeah, those are the ones, Kris. Pretty hard to find without any preview pictures to go by. Fascinating story, too, LOAF.
