SFX Gets Early Movie Preview (January 15, 2005)

Mr. Kat
Last month we brought you an article from the August 1999 (#54) issue of SFX, which was about a visit to the set of the WC movie. Now we have scans from the August 1998 (#41) issue which contained an early preview of the movie. Throughout they seem to be under the impression that Matthew Lillard plays Blair, but otherwise it's a very interesting read. The full size scans range from 1.5MB to 2.3MB each, so it may take a little while to view them.

The design of the movie Kilrathi differs from the chunky rugby-player look of the computer game, but that's a deliberate move on the part of Animated Extras, who wanted to break new ground. There's more of a lithe, feral power to these guys, and the sheepish grin on Matt Lillard's face when two of them hug him says it all - they're large and they're scary. So large, in fact, that there are some worries that they'll even fit into the alien ship set...
Incidentally, the update mentioning that this issue is on sale was one of our very first updates on the CIC's launch day. What a great day that was.

Dull video sequences? Those games had me on the edge of my seat, granted the improvement of gameplay introduced in Prophecy was welcome indeed but as my favourites in the series take the order IV, II, III, P, I - I can safely say that the superb storylines accompanying the wing commander series were what kept me playing.
However they thought Malcom McDowell joined in IV... :P

Exactly, Its the movies that got me hooked!!! I remember I was blown away when I saw the intro for Wc4.

Yea seriously. WCIV is my favorite game, but if you ask me the HUD, models, textures... basically everything about the game play was the worst in the series. The story, movies, and thematic elements were so great they made up for all the losses of the game play for me, and made it my favorite in the series.

I think the major complaint was that FMV cramped the scope of the storylines. Maybe it's because WC2 was my first WC game, but I agree with the writer of that sub-article that there wasn't anything particularly special with the (character interaction) FMV sequences which couldn't be done WC2-style.

But I'm certainly not ashamed to be fond of the FMV-focused WC3 and WC4 either, as the author seems to be.
