Secret Ops and XP...

Yep, another one with a problem.

I've read through all the sticky threads and just about every other thread I can find about the problem and I've tried every solution offered. So far, no luck. I was a huge fan of the WC games when I was younger and would love the opportunity to play them again.

So, here's the techy bit (I'm pretty rubbish with this sort of stuff, so please forgive anything I miss out).

Windows XP
Pentium 4, 3.00 Ghz
1GB Ram
Nvidea GeForce 6800
Sound Blaster Live

Now, I've set everything compatability wise to Win95 or Win98 (tried both). I've downloaded the HiRes patch and the Glide patch. I've tried changing the compatability before installing and I've tried making a shortcut to the file and still the same problem appears, thus:

First the message "Secret Ops has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Then, if I go into detail:

AppName: secretops.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: secretops.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0001677e

Frustrating, as it doesn't matter whether I'm trying to use Secret Ops or one of the fanmade ops, I get exactly the same message (as it's obviously my computer picking a fight with SO, sadly).

So, as a last ditch effort to play a wonderful WC game once more, anyone have any more ideas?

Thanks for your time ^^

You error message sure looks like a compatibility setting that would not have been applied. The compatibility has to be set on every WCP/SO game EXE you want to run
  • WC Prophecy: prophecy.exe
  • Secret Ops: secretops.exe
  • Unknown Enemy: wcue.exe
  • Standoff: standoff.exe
You do not need to set compatibility for any other EXE than those (ignore setup.exe and launcher.exe, for example).

Also, make sure that:
  1. you installed WCP and SO in separate folders
  2. you did not move or rename the path to WCP or SO (they need to stay in the same folder in wich you installed them at setup)
  3. Unknown Enemy and Standoff are installed in the exact same folder as SO, and in this order: SO, then UE, then Standoff.
  4. you selected "Direct3d" in the video options (setup.exe for WCP and SO, launchers for Unknown Enemy and Standoff). Glide will not work for you, as it only fork on those old Voodoo video cards or through Glide wrappers (and I wouldn't recommend trying to use Glide wrappers before you can sucessfully play the game in Direct3d first)
  5. you do not install any patch such as the hi-res patch before you can have the game to run at least once; after all no patch is needed to run WCP/SO and their mods under XP. Even then, proceed with caution reading the installations procedure carefully (and ask for help here if needed). In the case of the Hi-res patch for SO, I suggest you install it over SO before you install UE and Standoff. In the case of the "glide patch" you mentioned, since you will not use glide it's completely useless to you.
