Scores Of Scenes At Your Fingertips (July 18, 2006)

Hot on the heels of Howie's Cockpit Reference Pack, Wedge has posted his own collection of Wing Commander screenshots for fans to use. The set includes almost 250 images from Academy, Armada, Privateer and Wing Commander 1 through 4 with a strong emphasis on P1, WC1 & WC2. Many of the images were collected to build the scripts and walkthroughs available at Wedge's Wing Commander Site, and now individual fans can use these pictures to create their own projects or simply get inspiration. Even if you're not working on anything big and fancy, these screenshots are a wonderful reminder of all the diverse environments seen in the Wing Commander series. You can download the 5 meg zip here.

Thanks for taking the time to buildup and share this collection, Wedge. :) I know how time-consuming this process can be.

Out of interest, how did you go about grabbing the screenshots for this pack? If it was all done fairly recently, I could see the screenshot facility in the latest DOSBox coming in handy, but if it was only done as required over the years, were you using older, DOS-only capture programmes?

Also, with some of the WC3 screenshots, did you edit and split-screen combine different versions of the same backdrop, i.e. one of the barracks screenshots includes Flint, Flash & Vaquero or is that simply a combination of the interactive movie elements that haven't been cycled through yet?

Cheers,

Bryn

Glad you find it useful. It really didn't take that long since I had accumulated the collection over a few years (look at the time-stamps: some of Howard's collection also appears to date back a year or two as well). Often people need reference material, and I thought if the cockpits were made available, why not make some of the other scenery available too?

I never bothered trying DOSBox simply because I haven't needed to (yet). I think I used ScreenThief and PCXDump for the non-FMV games (both of them DOS programs).

I did edit a few of the images - the WC3 rooms are among them. These were all kept for personal use, so I thought I would make them a little more interesting for myself. Some of the screenshots were from requests made by others - of course, I did not edit those.

I'm pretty busy these days, but if people have specific requests for screenshots, I am still happy to provide help when I can.

Thanks again for the info. ScreenThief and PCXDump would likely come in useful then if I ever completed rigging together an old DOS system, however with DOSBox improving with every release, sourcing the last few components for the rig has dropped down the list of priorities.
