Vice Admiral
We haven't had one for a while, so why not share some Wing Commander beauty from any game...

Here are some snaps of my recent Privateer playthrough (highly reccomended with the latest incarnation of DOSbox).

I'd forgotten how great this game is.

Still remains my favorite game of ALL time. I love how the world draws you in and the artwork makes you think that just around the next corner you'll see something new/exciting in the Wing Commander Universe. Just playing the game gives you a sense of the scope the developers wanted to add to the game. If you open the .tre files in a text editor you can see how massive they had planned to make the game.

Alright, here's something I noticed from the "Alternative trailer" there in the WC4 section I linked to... Aparently they kept about the same shot/live action, but the angle of the CGI in the background is different and way more muted and blurred in the final version!

Awesome looking Hellcats :)

Probably too much going on to be worth cleaning up, just blur instead :D

For that exact reason, I don't think I'll ever grow tired of this game. At times it gets repetitive, but it's worth it for all of the Universe we learn about, crammed with little touches of canon.

These from Wing Commander, Secret Ops:

and if anybody would be so kind as to include some WC3 screens, I'd be most grateful. It's the only game my current system won't let me play properly, would love to see some of your fighting pics. :)

Here it is clearer:

It makes you wonder: At what point did they change it and why? Clearly a lot of work went into rendering the flight deck and that shot looks more like the hangar when you fly through it inflight. Was it to make the lighting match the overall look of the stuff that was shot on Film? Was Chris Roberts just not happy with the overall quality of the CG? Did it look too fake if you left it more clear in the background?

Especially in the context of not having enough render time to redo the Vesuvius/Mt. St. Helens sequences to fix the numbers...

Since we're in the business of posting images (and personally, I really would rather they be posted as attachments, not in-line images, because they quickly fill up the screen space)...

  1. I think I scanned this Bloodfang-escorted-by-Dralthi image from the Kilrathi Saga calendar.
  2. Beauty shot of the TCS Victory.
  3. Dula 7 Star Base destruction.
  4. Ditto.
  5. Beauty shot of the TCS Midway.
  6. Thought I would take a picture of my handiwork in the final simulator mission.
  7. Ditto.
  8. Just a pretty shot of the remains of Kilrah and the Nephilim wormhole.
  9. Beauty shot of the TCS Ceberus.

All of these images are several years old. I don't know why I didn't have anti-aliasing on my Prophecy screen shots. They're rendered with DirectX - I hope to redo them some day if/when the OpenGL patch works with the Prophecy VOBs and screen captures. (The former might already be available, I can't remember, but I don't know about that latter. I'm pretty sure the Secret Ops OpenGL patch does not have working screen captures.)

Thanks for sharing these Wedge, the Bloodhound and Simulator images are awesome. Agreed about the 'attachment' thing, I'd re-edit my old posts...if I could.

Hmmm, is it just me that can't edit old posts after a day or two?

I like the in-post pictures; I don't see especially well and find it easier to have them right there.

The Bloodfang shot is from the calendar--and, originally, the Wing Commander II demo.

[*]Thought I would take a picture of my handiwork in the final simulator mission.
Mmm... there have been more than a few discussions over the years about why WCP didn't have proper exploding capships like previous games in the series, but shots like this serve as a great reminder that WCP's approach had its benefits, too. There was always something unsatisfying about blowing up a huge giant capship and seeing only... well, emptiness. It's just a pity they couldn't make more impressive wreck models, like the one they used for the Kilrathi cruiser in the first mission.
