Progress Update

Hey you asked for suggestions :D

That's a lot better, although (I'm not sure about the correct vocab for audio so bare with me here) it sounds like there are two "growling" tracks been played, I hear your voice, but it also sounds like another Kat is just growling into the mic at the same time.

Also, I like the last one there buddy....that wasn't intended to be a taunt but I see you recorded it anyways :D

well, honestly most of the wc3 kilrathi dialogue sounds like either Tim Curry or John Rhys Davies growling the lines into the mic with lion growls added over top.

True, but these sound like the growls are out of sync with the speaking parts. They overlap each other a bit too much.

A little something for you to have a look at: http://outlander.solsector.net/vid_files/Kilrathi%20Comms%20(WC3).zip

Those are all of the actual Kilrathi Comms from WC3 extracted and converted from the PSX version. Some of them have a text file in the directory that includes the subtitle info in three languages and which are the associated video files that go with the lines. Some videos are associated with more than one sound file.

Dang, if the Dauntless looked like that in UE then I think the Nep's would have just said in their funky language "Sorry for the intrusion, we'll just...uh...go around" and jumped system.

Oh, that VO is hilarious. It sounds like another Kilrathi is playing around by blowing into another mic on the same line.

I think that was version 3 or 4.

AD: Thanks! That helps a lot. I hadn't realized how overboard I'd gone with the effects till I listened to those. I'll refine the comms and re-upload them. Thanks again!
Iceblade: The Dauntless in UE looked awesome as it was! I've always liked the idea of a Bengal going up against the Nephilim.
The effects on the voices area bit much - I concede that. I'll definitely tone down the effects on the next pass.
So last night I did a final texture test - to see what scale texture this thing will need in game. I was worried that we'd need a 4096x4096 for all the detail to show though - but lucky me! There's just enough resolution for the the goodies to show up. Add in a detail texture for those really close-up situations, and I think we're golden.
I'll post some texture sheets tonight, along with some in-viewport screenshots.
I also know that Joel is preparing another update, so those of you who love text have that to look forward to. :)

Okay - so here's the Combined texture map for the Bengal:

Packed full of detail!
And here are some in-MAX shots of the mesh with the combined map on it.

You can also see that the whole thing holds up fairly well, ever closer than you'll probably get in the game.

Enjoy!

I remember from the Heart of the Tiger novelization, that the incoming audio voice is actually a real time computer translation of the original Kilrathi comm. In my imagination, the end result would probably be a bit unlike the one we hear in the games, don't you think?

If you'll recall in Freedom Flight, Captain Thorn and Col. Halcyon spoke with Ralgha nar Hhallas using the same translation technology on their belts. The book described his surprise that they were speaking fluent kilrathi until he saw the translator units on their belts. That would lead one to think that the translator units give some manner of either reproduction or restructuring of one's own voice. It went on to imply that the translators did, however, bring everything across in "flat tones", which I interpreted as having little or no emotion. But when they became rather shocked at the news of what was going to happen at Firekka, the emotion of their voices still made it through the translation device.

I point all of this out to say this: if we assume (as we have every right to) that the same translation technology is used to translate insults coming from and going to enemy vessels, it will still sound like their voices, but possibly come across with less emotion. We don't know how inflected the kilrathi sound in their own tongue, so take that into account.

Also, in End Run, there's an example that fighters didn't yet have that translation technology onboard. I believe it was either Bear or Lone Wolf that had to speak a little Kilrathi to insult his opponent. And taunts from the Kilrathi tended to be broken, heavily accented English.

Wow . . . sorry for the book.

Maybe kinda late here, but have you figured out where to put the broadside torpedo batteries? I realize the movie Claw and the game Claw are quite different, but stat-wise I'd think they're mostly the same. Anyway, I didn't notice anything like that on the model. The model is really awesome, by the way, if i haven't said so before. :)

Saturnyne: Greebles are the little bitty details, normally of a mechanical nature, used to give a ship detail and scale. Good examples? The trenchs along the side edges of a Star destroyer were chock full of Greebles. Also known as Nurnies.
ELTEE: Thnaks. I'm actually not any closer to choosing a name. I'm sort of partial to the Kyoto, or the Eagle's Talon. Either one of those would be fine.
Dyret: Thanks, and good eye. I don't think were going to actually model the cap-ship torpedo weapons in this game. I could be completely wrong on that, and if I am it would be a very easy exercise to add them in.

That Bengal Strike Carrier is the most nostalgia-inducing image to ever hit my monitor.

Amazing work!

I also have some propspective names if you use the model as a ConFed carrier in Pioneer:

To me, it just looks like a TCS Yamato. Kipling is a sissified politically correct name, a warship of that magnitude should have a powerful battleship name like Yamato.

I've always liked the name TCS Excelsior as well.

I struggle to imagine a universe in which the author of 'The White Man's Burden' could be considered politically correct.
