Can someone who has the OLD Privateer 1 game (the game that doesn't have the 150 meg .rf files) on floppy disks. I have the gold edition, but it's too big to transfer over the net.

I had that version on 6 disks compressed, but the disks when I was recording everything to a CDR, had bad CRC :( , I think maybe a friend of mine may still have that version :).

Hmm

Could you get it from him? I'm trying to send it to my friend who is gonna see if he can install it on his system.

This would be similar to posting a game on a warez site. It is not leagal to xfer any full version of a game on the net. Although Privateer is an old game, it is still not legal to do what you are intending to do. Your best bet is to check eBay and find a version someone has for sale, which I see the Privateer game floppy version just about every day there. Buy it and then send to your friend or have your friend purchase it. You can get it so cheap its rediculous! I recently got 3 copies of the floppy version of Privateer, two of them are the 3 1/2 floppy version and the other one is the old 5 inchers. All of them cost me less than 10 bucks together!! One of the 3 incher sets had all 6 floppies plus the 2 Rightious Fire floppies included plus the manuals and flight handbooks. Happy hunting!

Question, question, question...

Which is "better" to be made functioning under Windows with a DOS reboot: the original Privateer on 3.5 floppy disks or the re-release classic on CD-ROM?

Quick, I have an auction pending... :)

The original floppy version will require a slow down utiltiy like moslo (best). The CD-ROM Classics version is speed adjusted, as may be other CD versions if the .TRE file is large in size (85MB-150MB) which will also be speed adjusted.

So if I have the Privateer CD version from EA classics it is speed adjusted? Heck, I never tried to play it on my new computer because I thought it would be way too fast! I will have to try this out.

Both are speed adjusted. They have some interesting dialogue differences between them, but the full-speech CD version is probably the nicest.

The CD-ROM classic has the full speech version, which makes the game even more enjoyable! It is speed adjusted and runs perfectly on a p2 300 based machine in the PIF dos boot.

How about the game manual, though?

The one from the floppy disks version is probably the nicest right?

For the most compatiability and playability, use the CD-ROm version since it is tweaked and peaked for todays systems. But you have to watch a few things tho, like have proper DOS drivers for your system. If you have a pure digital joystick, chances are it wont work in DOS mode unless the joystick drivers emmulate analog in DOS mode, much like the Microsoft Sidewinder 3d Pro does, which will work analog in DOS mode. Sticks such as the MS Precision Pro with or without force feedback will not work at all!! I had to buy a replacement MS 3d pro to play these games.

You probably bought a German/European version Mekt... :)

If Bandit sez it's the same, who are YOU to contradict him? LOL ;)

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean that you'd get a physical manual with the classics -- but you get the same manual on the CD (and in the case of the ones that come with physical manuals -- CD Deluxe Edition and Privateer/Strike Commander CD, it's the same printed manual).

ARGH!! Wait wait wait... I'm lost!

Do you get a physical manual for Wing Commander Privateer Gold?

No, American classics editions do not have manuals (other than install guides)... the manuals are in pdf format on the CDs (or a scary old format on some of the old CDs).
