Privateer Article Half Arsed (January 3, 2026)

Long Live the Confederation!
Condé Nast's longtime tech news website Ars Technica has published an article on, of all things, Wing Commander Privateer! It's a short--and to our ears accurate--look back at the game and how it managed to pull of something very special that still hasn't quite been repeated in the genre. Don't expect a detailed history or any shocking news (they're ultimately just trying to collect GOG affiliate sales) but it's nice to see the game celebrated... and thanks the prominence of the outlet there's already been a lot of chatter about Privateer on social media!

I like the weapons configuration of the Centurion in one of the article images: Two tachyon guns on one wing and two ion guns on the other. Also why is the player's Centurion attacking a Galaxy? It is probably the Black Rhombus.

It looks like they took the screenshots from GOG's store listing... which means that was probably the Centurion set up by GOG's QA tester who ran through the game back in 2011!
