Privateer 2: Darkening

Hiya peeps. Brand new here, so not really sure what you talk about.

I was wondering if anbody had a method of playing WCPrivateer2 on WindowsME. Cannot get it to work for love nor money. Have talked to EATech support etc...but no help. They recon it won't work on WinME, just Windows95/98. I wondered if anybody had a patch that would enable it to work on WinMe?

If not, which out if the numerous WinCommander games is the best and will actually work with Windows??

Would be v grateful if you lot could help me out. Great site mind.
Phil

The following games work on ME

Hi!

I use Windows ME and the following titles work:

WC1, WC 2 & WC 3 from The Kilrathi Saga.

WC IV The price of Freedom (With the Windows Patch)

WC Prophecy

Hope it helps

ghost: eh?

Manticore: thanx:) Which one is the best? being a cash strapped student, can only really aford to by one (unless I can find a 3 for £20 effort!). I would assume that WC4 or Prophecy - being the most recent. Did you have any problem installing any of these?

I personaly like WC IV over Prophecy.

Prophecy is to linear. You can't effect the mission choices the saqme way as you can in WC 4.

I bet you can fing WC 4 on ebay for about $20.

Make sure it is teh Windows version of WC 4 or download the patch for the DOS version to make it work on Windows.

Well then I finally agree with him. ME was Microsoft's biggest failure.

I agree. WinME was a step downward from Win98. WinXP is much superior to WinME--get it if you can afford it.

Yes, ME failed to be any more useful than 98SE. I sold it to someone else at a loss when it failed to boot after 2 weeks use.

But I have a sys with two hard drives; Win2k Pro on one drive, and 98SE on the other. It works out very good, since 98SE was the last Windows OS to let you boot into DOS, and 2k is suprisingly stable.

Do you think its ME or your system? As my systems got faster and faster, it became more difficult getting the older WC stuff to work properly.
So on eBay I bought a P200 system for $25. I have it setup for dualboot with Dos and Win98se. No more problems with any WC windows and Dos games :)

Welcome aboard! We'd need more information to troubleshoot your Privateer 2 difficulties. It should be possible to make the game work.

Sorry to go off topic, but I was thinking of upgrading my operating system from 98SE (so I can run VIZ 4).
My available choices are Windows XP, or Windows 2000 pro.
My CAD lecturer says go to 2000 pro
The University I.T. Technicians both say go to XP
and the resident computer nut on our course says that XP will be fine,
which do you guys think are best?

(But they all agree, don't touch ME even with a 50ft bardge poll :) )

I think all in all, XP would be better as it seems to be more compatible with games than 2K from what I've seen/heard. However, I would recomend having another system, or at least some form of dual boot with something capable of running certain oldies games that will *never* run in XP (that is, if you plan on going nastalgic).

I use 2K Pro simply because I'm too cheap to upgrade, and I also like to wait for the next OS to come out before stepping up anyway, so all the patches and Second/Third/Fourth Editions are out. I don't like beta testing, esp OS's! ;)

Depends on what you want to do I'd say. If you only plan to work on the system or if you are willing to do dual boot to 98SE to play then I'd go 2000. Its more robust.
If you only want one OS go with XP as it can do both gaming and stability reasonably well.

My query would however by why switch? As far as I found on the web (I am absolutely no expert in graphic rendering) VIZ works on WinME and Win2000 (no XP compatibility listed - strangely). And I'v yet to see a software that runs on ME, but not on Win98. So before upgrading your OS I'd check if the software doesn't actually run on the present one!

according to the CAD lecturer, VIZ 4 won't run in 98 (Viz 3 does) and he says I need to upgrade, although I wonder now he he tried to run it in 98 or 98SE, will that make a difference?
