Point of Origin: Vol. III, No. 41 (December 18, 2007)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
The July 2, 1993 issue of Point of Origin is fairly quiet - the biggest news is that good progress has been made on the Ultima 7 Part 2 'add in' (The Silver Seed). There's plenty of Origin culture to be found here, but not much mention of Wing Commander...

A very special thanks to Joe Garrity of the Origin Museum for making this resource available and to Electronic Arts for sending them to him in the first place!
  • Pulse Check mentions that Academy is still being tested: "The QA side of the world has been busy, with 5, count 'em 5 games in test right now... We've gotcher U7 SNES, yer Runes of Virtue SNES, yer Wing Commander Academy, yer UW1 and 2 CD and the ever present and wondermuss Silver Seed add-on to Serpent Isle."

Sorry about that -they should work now (or in a few minutes.) I upload them to the FTP before the updates are published... but I've been in the dark for three days at home after a big windstorm knocked out my power.

Things didn't go very well. My fish died, despite doing everything I could to save them. It's been a bad week.

I am not certain whether you're serious or not...normally when people are talking about their fish they' re joking but considering that in the week at least your controller got thrashed and you mentioned some distress, so it could really have been a bad week.

If you're serious, then I am sorry for you and your fish. Did he die because of the power failure ?

Tropical fish need water of a certain temperature to survive, and even if they're not tropical, even regular fish can die in a tank that's lost power supply if there's more fish than the tank size would normally accomodate (water filters usually agitate the water surface to increase oxygen absorption into the water).

One of my friends lost a lot of tropical fish after being away for a week and a blackout occurred during that time. My sympathies to you and your fish, LOAF.

Yes, unfortunately I'm not joking. I know some people consider pet fish a decoration, but I never have. I believe people have a responsibility to do whatever they can for their pets.

Five fish died, and I had raised them from babies over several years. I stayed up all night for two nights, I tried to keep the water warm by heating things with the fireplace... but it just wasn't enough. (It was the cold that did it, I had a battery backup for oxygenating the water...)

It's hard to adequately explain the situation - I live out in the woods too far away to transfer them somewhere else... and no one was expecting a wind storm and a sudden cold snap... or for the power company to take three days to repair the line. I was also taking care of my mom, who had a hip replacement last week and can't get around at all... so I was very limited in what I could do.

I know there's worse things in the world, but I feel pretty bad about it.

You're absolutely right on your take on this, you should always care for your pets and I certainly do not belittle fish owners. I had an aquarium as well when I was young and certainly was sad when one of the fish died.

But I was surprised that fish would die so quickly. I know that when the pumping ceases, fish can die of it. But that in three days the tempetures would drop so quickly. I guess they were exotic fishes?

Again, I am sorry. For your mother as well, of course.
