old wc question

It is a shame that most WC games can't be brought new right now, but that's no reason to link pirate stuff on the CZ.

Perhaps, if WCP does well enought, they migh get that SNES WC2 port and turn it into a GBA game.

Out of sheer curiosity, which ones?

The only one that remotely interests me is Ultima: Mt. Drash, an Ultima spinoff title for the Vic-20. It's generally considered the rarest video game - although a loose copy of the casette recently sold for about a thousand dollars on eBay (which is to say, it *is* available). There's an Atari cartridge title whose name escapes me that had only a few dozen copies product - but that's not my area of expertise.

And LOAF, these things are not so easy outside of the US.

I've never lived in South America, so I'm not familiar with your specific circumstance... but I *have* collected lines of video games from all around the world from right here in the us (or, rarely, while living in Europe). If I can get a full set of Japanese FM Towns Wing Commander ports, learning to read Japanese as I go, anyone can find a plain old Kilrathi Saga with a fair amount of ease. Put an ad in your local paper - check good will stores and computer junk shops - put forth a little bit of effort! "It wasn't easy, so I stole it" isn't a good excuse for anything.

If a copy still exists, that'd be nice - although the GBA isn't the "tiny SNES clone" that some people have likened it to. A lot of games, particularly the more advanced ones like WC(/SM/WC2) made use of a lot of special hacks inherent to the SNES... that just don't exist on the GBA.

But LOAF, the problems here are: No local developed games, the Dollar is very expensive, little to no contact with offline retail, huge mail import taxes (at least 60%!), NO used game stores of notice, no old games stores of notice, no more import PC games stores... kinda complicated.

eBay gets a lot more expensive for us... and several people there won't ship overseas. Local version of it is very weak in old pc games... You catch my drift.

I managed to buy all my WC games legit, but I was refering to other games, released by less important retailers.

Hell, I had a hellish time tracking down MechWarrior 4!!!! but I managed to buy it legit too. with a sports bottle.

This might sound weird but try PC Gaming stores in the UK. I tracked down WC:P Gold Edition in an EA software bundle for $20 two years ago.

I've been trying to track some games... But boy, aren't old games expensive... They are:

Great Battles: Collectors edition. It's a pack of 3 games (I have all 3), with an editor that lets you edit and play scenarios other people built. I just really need the editor.

Shadow Company. Because there's x-com like missions in Rio!

I found them at half.com, but they won't ship to Brazil. When I don't want them anymore, they will show up cheap and easy.

Are you talking about the Secret Missions for SNES or a different title? cause here is one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3066751693&category=3603

BTW is it worth playing?

Jim

Different title - Origin developed but did not publish a version of Vengeance of the Kilrathi for the SNES.

Well back to the GBA issue, there do seem to be more and more "older" games that where very popular making a comeback on new consules. Did Prophecy Advance sell enough to make it seem likly that another WC game would look good?

A little late to the conversation, BUT:

According to the US Copyright Office:

Works Originally Created on or after January 1, 1978

A work that is created (fixed in tangible form for the first time) on or after January 1, 1978, is automatically protected from the moment of its creation and is ordinarily given a term enduring for the author's life plus an additional 70 years after the author's death. In the case of "a joint work prepared by two or more authors who did not work for hire," the term lasts for 70 years after the last surviving author's death. For works made for hire, and for anonymous and pseudonymous works (unless the author's identity is revealed in Copyright Office records), the duration of copyright will be 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.

At least we know that, from a technical point of view, if they can make WCP to work on GBA, they can do that with the previous games. Well, it's not that simple, but it would be very nice.

Oh, yeah, absolutely - the GBA is much *more* advanced than the SNES was. It just seems that there's a common misconception that you can easily port SNES->GBA with little/no actual work. Something like WC1 would have to be redesigned, since the GBA doesn't have the mode-7 graphics hack and whatnot.

The GBA is really a sweet little machine. It'd be cool to see something like SWC (which won't happen) for it. But I'd be happy if they released older final fantasy games on the GBA...

Heck, just as I wrote the above I realised I'd rather play NEW FF and WC games on any plataform... At least they are releasing new FF games on several systems.

FF isn't going anywhere since its become a flagship for attention whoring anime fans. Pretty sad considering its now deligated to an even lower (higher?) standard of crappy storytelling that'll still sell a billion units based on name alone.

I think it would be technically and economically possible to make a WC game in cutscenes like the ones on Freelancer. And it's the same as WC1, really! Go to a bar, sit, talk to people. Well, trent doesn't like to sit, but you get the idea. We could watch Blair *nod* in full 3D!

True, it's not like the SNES could run something like Prophecy Advance.

Still, they could use all the original artwork for those games. The 320X200 256-color sprits would look rather decent on the GBA.

Yup - I've seen the proposal for that exact project. I wouldn't bet on it happening immediately. (Though if Freelancer had been a huge hit, we'd probably be playing WC7 now).

That would be nice. Freelancer did well enought to have a Music CD.

Well, RTS games began on 1992 but only became a fever later on. RPGs were almost gone for a while, and then there was a boom. If space combat sims come back, they might bring WC back.

I would suspect that trend will still be lagging behind this FPS craze. Though, I highly suspect that the next WC will incorporate some form of FPI during non-flight gameplay.

I'm not sure it would make such a big difference. Everyone that cares about their name being involved on a title knew it was Chris Robert's project.
