My Wing Commander TV Show

Hey everybody, I have recently decided that after getting through highschool (ugh... :)) I am going to try VERY hard to become a producer/director. I believe that I could envoke on the world a really good Wing Commander TV show... do you think I could do it? :) Also... does anyone here know how long it would take and what film school's are good?

Well, film schools are a bloody pain. I have one friend at University of Southern California, the most promeninent film school in the world, another friend at NYU and a co-worker at the University of Louisiana.

To make a WC TV show, you're going to need to somehow revitalize the series plus be able to make a pitch to the appropriate producers. None of this is easy, since Producers ignore unsolicitated material that is not passed from an agent unless it comes to the desk from someone they owe a huge favor.

For further info, try talking to WCM novel author Peter Telep, his email is in the back of his novels.

I wish you good luck indeed, Mav23! I've just passed my final exam (or rather: final movie) at the Munich Film Academy. I've been having lessons lead by a professor who knows someone at NBC, so I once had a chance of letting this man read a rough version of a WC Movie script I had written (actually just for fun). That was damn luck, since producers tend to listen to hardly anyone, as LeHah already stated. And US producers usually don't listen to German film makers at all.
The guy (damn, I gotta look up his name) said that the script was basically okay, and by himself had the idea that this basic plot could fit a decent SF-TV-show. Suffering from sudden megalomania ;) I actually cautiously asked if he could maybe ask someone who's really in charge of something if there was a chance of this idea becoming reality. But he answered that only talking to one of the chief executives could bring him in real trouble with nothing more to offer than an idea and a rough script written by a German nobody (and a Wing Commander movie floating around that had been a box office flop).
But I would of course love to see someone succeed, after this event was probably as close as I'll ever get to realizing such an idea (and I've gotta face it: I wasn't close at all). I don't want to discourage you, just be warned: There's a lot of nice blokes around, but some of the suits in charge really got "hairs on their teeth", as we say in Germany! :D

Anyway, good luck again!

Ciao

Hey, just tell me one thing!
Why do germans use CIAO to say bye or hello or what the hell ya want!
I know a lot of you using this italian (as you probably have understood I AM italian)word! WHY!!!!!?????
PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!!
DON'T LET ME DIE WITH THIS DOUBT!!!!!

Because our own versions (which are "Tschüss" and "Tschö") sound awfully stupid! :D At least that's the reason why I use "Ciao". The Italian word is just way better. But hey, my last name is "Moretto", so it's quite fitting anyway, isn't it?

I really hope I can get this done someday, to get people back in to Wing Commander... but does anyone know that guys e-mail address?

I agree with LeHah, if you wanted to make a new WC series then it would need something to revitalise it. Maybe you could set it in the same universe with the same confed but the script would have to be somewhat more complex than the game. The game had a pretty good plot but a) its already effectively been done and b) it was only really good by computer game standards (and not by movie/series standards). Maybe you could focus more on people and characters rather than events. Maybe even add a few complex love stories ;)

Good luck Mav, I would enjoy another good WC series. But I think at the time such a cartoon would not be very popular. But you have to wait anyhow a bit until you start, maybe the market will be there in a few years. :)

BTW, I do not use 'Ciao', neither do many of my friends (we are Germans) only one girl comes to my mind...

I agree, jammyo2k. That's what I actually did with my script. I took the basic universe (meaning characters, ships, etc.) and wrote a story that has similarities to the original one, but the overall plot is different. I also adapted the pilgrim idea from the movie and expanded it quite a bit. This, of course, causes some elements not to be in complete harmony with the games, but you can't have both a TV/Movie-compatible story and complete adaption of the games.

Did he say anything about a cartoon? I thought we were talking about live-action (meaning real actors) here?

Maybe it's my own preference to the privateering world, but I definitely think that a privateering series would do better than a military based one. It leaves the plot options open to anything.

or another idea might be to do one based on the Kilrathi

(since a WC TV series is an unlikely bet right now, I feel safe in stating these. however the way TV works you would need to have a opening series that explains everything about the universe, sets the stage, before you could get off into farther out ideas.)

I never said *anything* about a cartoon.

1: The series would be live action.

2: It would take place during the Confederation/Nephilim War

3: It would take place on a carrier of class and name that no one has heard of before.

4: It would involve *new* characters.

5: THIS IS IN NO WAY AN ADAPTION OF ANY WING COMMANDER GAMES

Well, of course, you'd have to get Origin's permission to make such a show, but we'd all love to see it... one of these days... when we're all a little older... Whatever. ;)

Confed/Nephilim struggle. Nah. T-K War'd be better, man.

Come to think of it, how would you have live action Nephilim warrior? They're insectile with several legs!

And I think it'd be hard to pull off a sci-fi TV show with effects which don't look tacky.

Most of the inter-species action would be in the cockpit or via video messages, but the main focus would be of course the *essence* of Wing Commander, drama and space combat.

That's where computer animation comes in.

Mav you can make it something like Babylon 5, and maybe even get JMS to write the script. :)

Well, it would be a few years (five at least, probably much more) until he comes near to prodcuing such a show. Until then CGI will have progressed even more in producing affordable SFX. Remember Species 8472 from "Star Trek Voyager"? That was CGI as well, and IMHO it looked okay. In a few years it can look even better at the same or even lower production cost. A WC TV-show would have be a big-budget show like Star Trek anyway, otherwise you cannot even think of realizing it.
You could, of course, also use animatronics for the Nephilim. Look at the latest Jurassic Park - they can do some splendid stuff with animatronics nowadays.

The biggest problem when starting in the Nephilim war would IMO be, as someone said before, explaining the universe. A lot of stuff important for the Nephilim storyline has already hapened in the WC universe. WC fans like me wouldn't care if it wasn't explained, but you can't afford producing a show just for the fans. So I guess making a well-understandable pilot for this one would be quite an interesting challenge.
