Morningstar Project

BlueClaw

Spaceman
Did the Morningstar Heavy Fighter ever come to see actual service in the Confederation Navy, or did its jump drive complications keep it from going beyond the testing stage? Also, was the Stiletto actually an offshoot of the Morningstar Project?

As stated in the WCA manual, the Morningstar is called the most modern and sophisticated Capship destroyer of the Confederation (IIRC). This could lead to the conclusion that the Mornigstar entered regular service.
And I don't think there's any proof for a connection between the Morningstar and the Stiletto, except some visual similarities.

Even if the Morningstar did enter actual service I really didn't care for it. So what if it had three particle cannons. All those guns sucked so much juice you couldn't sustain a constant rate of fire. after about four or five salvos the gun capacitors were dry. And only two missiles. What the hell good does two missiles do anybody. The mace just sucked too. A damn nuke that is basically useless. Saves on torps but it's such a waste to use it on just one ship.:(

Yeah, but after four or five salvos that hit, nothing you fired upon was there anymore. ;)
And the Mace sucked? I don't know but a weapon with the strength of two torpedoes (at least) and no lock-on time is extremely appealing to me.
So in fact: I like the Morningstar :)

Key word here being "hit". I don't know about you but my accuracy isn't 100%. As to the Mace, with no lock on time you have to be accurate enough to hit your target. If it's something big like a capship or base no big deal. I just think it a waste of resources to equip a fighter with nukes. Save em for bigger and better targets.

I'm not saying that I absolutley hate the Mornigstar, it's just that I don't care to fly it that much. If I had a choice I'd choose a different ship.

That's not really a flaw in the Morningstar's design, now, is it? ;)

Then there's no big deal... Why would you want to waste a missile powerful enough to take out any capital ship on a small target? And then, why would you have any trouble hitting a larger target?

MORNINGSTARZ R0X0R!!

Seriously, though, I appreciated it. I thought it was a cool ship. I would have much rather had Morningstars on the Victory than Thunderbolt VIIs.

I raise mpanty's question too- if they entered regular Confed service, where are they in Wing Commander III?? Were they used just for "special," missions by covert ops? You know, were those the fighters Angel & Co. used during their ill-fated interdiction...?

You know the old saying, "Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there." ;)

For those who don't like the Morningstar, I second all the posts countering your complaints against it. Too, I seldom use missiles anyway, and I'd much rather take a Morningstar than a Sabre (which I happen to like too).

According to Academy (67-68) they were Confed's premiere anti-capship weapon... presumably they were around -- but not among the four squadrons assigned to Victory.
