Making the Game - Part 2 (May 7, 2008)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Today we have a second take on the Wing Commander Prophecy concept, this one by Captain Johnny himself. It's shorter and less dramatically different - I think everyone will appreciate that this version comes a lot closer to the chosen plan than the Chris Douglas version presented yesterday. It also features a new pilot, an older ship and two alien races, organic ships... as well as many opportunities for reintroducing previous characters as available.

This one has a lot of great ideas in it as well! Especially that your opponent for the game wouldn't be the 'ancient evil' that plagued the galaxy, just another race running from it :P

For some reason I like the idea that the enemy faced would actually be just a race so scared that their just running down the quickest path (even if it happens to be recklessly through Confed space). Its just nice being having an opponent that isn't evil, but just worried about it's survival. And the fact that they can be made to help near the end I think also lends them some depth.

Although I think it would be silly for any race to just fire on the Confed ships. Maybe if someone (Maniac?) rashly downed a couple of their transports first and they returned fire (thinking we were the hostile aliens) it would have made more sense. If your entire species is running from something called "The Evil One" I would think stopping to fight would be a very "last resort" action. Because if your fighting your not running, and if your not running there is a damn good chance that you are going to be caught.

Again - nice stuff!

Although the plot reminds me a lot of the movie "Kings of the sun" (featureing Yul Brynner). It's actually the same story, a mayan people with an evil and far too strong enemy has to leave their home somewhere in mexico and flees across the sea - in their new home they encounter an indian tribe. At first they are uncertain if it is friend or foe. Finally they become friends and at the end they battle the "evil ones" of this movie, the enemy the mayans were fleeing from together and - surprise surprise - defeat them.

Still I like the idea of this plot a lot - this would also have made an interesting WC5 to play.

I agree with the former posters, I like the idea of the first aliens not being truly evil but just on the run and with a "it's every man for himself"-attitude.

Of course, I love that the Kilrathi play a bigger part and also that the universe seems more alive than in the actual WCP.

I prefer the idea of a race that's running scared, too - but I don't think we can mesh that with what actually happened in Prophecy (with all the talk of the mother creature and the aligned people and whatnot). I do get the discinct impression that we would still have gone on to fight 'better' bad guys in theoretical Prophecy sequels, though...

Tonight's post is just a little thing, it's going to be really really disappointing after these first two.
