Making the Game: Mission E5 (March 20, 2009)

Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
Cut mission! E5 was a 'dead end' mission in the style of Proxima/Sol from the Wing Commander III. Some nice dialogue from Maniac and Stiletto -- did that make it into the game somewhere? (At the risk of disagreeing with Ben Potter, I loved the lose-lose missions in previous games...)

These updates are thanks to John "Captain Johnny" Guentzel, who provided several CD image archives of material used by the Wing Commander Prophecy development team!

I always thought of these missions to be winnable somehow. In WC3 i just kept on fighting until I was holding everything back myself with a partially damaged fighter and no more missiles. Well, figured i'd just eject since after spending over an hour in the mission you'd get pretty exhausted.

Also, this appears to have a landing sequence?

"If you end up here, YOU SUCK!!" and yet Wilford thinks he never served with better pilots...that's quite sad for him. Especially if you consider that he somewhat served with Blair.

And "at least a hundred fighters" - pff, that's nothing! :) 5 Wasps should be able to take them down.

Wow, I would have loved to play this mission. Who says we don't like the occasional unwinnable gauntlet?

Looks like left-over text from filling out a 'template' form. It's pretty clear that there's no intention of letting the player land in this mission.

Personally, I don't think missions you can't win are very fun either, no matter how many of them you take down with you...

Oh, for a losing track I think such unwinnable missions are fine...but they should be unwinnable in the sense that you will get overwhelmed sometime and not that it's just infinite in length. At some points there should be so many enemies that even the best pilot has to eject or face destruction.

Well... yeah, that's why I don't particularly like missions which can't be won. It's often unclear what the intent of the mission designer is in that regard.

"Ah, another wave of Kitties. No problem!"

Exactly! If they throw 6 Dralthis after you for infinity then the battle will take very very long and in the end, you'll eject because you're bored not because you had to give up in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Yawn... I'm so bored... the Kilrathi never stop coming... I think I'll give this yellow and black striped cord a tug... :/
