Longbow

Seventh Part of the Seal
The only redeeming quality that the longbow posses is that its the ONLY dedicated bomber in the Kilrathi Saga that actually has afterburners... I'm curious why? Why does this miserable excuse for a bomber have afterburners while far better ones are getting shot down left and right due to a lack of mobility?

I think you all rely on afterburners far too much.. I have gotten a lot farther in bombing missions by escaping the melee, and then sitting and waiting for them to come to me.. slow to about 30, watch them overshoot and unleash hell when they try a head on at you.

It has afterburners because people complained that the bombers in WC2 made the game too hard.:)

I don't use afterburners so much in the earlier WCs, and I thought the ultra-thick shielding made up for that anyway. My only issue with the Broadsword and the Crossbow was that bombing runs took forever to complete, but I can always adjust the frame rate/skip to temporarily speed up the game. :) (This is on the DOS version, BTW.)

Heck, I'm an afterburner junkie, but you only need them on the longbow because it takes so flippin' long to get anywhere otherwise. They're useless for combat.

The longbow may not look so great on paper, but the fact that I could survive quite literally forever by using the new power management system to juice my shields made it an easy win in my book. I didn't have to worry about dying in a longbow- and I don't think I ever have.

But I only disliked it when we were in the Crossbow, I liked the Broadsword. No afterburners, but the damn thing had quite a bit of firepower. Three Mass Drivers and three turrets with dual rapid firing neutron guns.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the crossbow's offensive capability, but one turret just never really cut it for me.

I think the only time I find turrets useful in WC2 is when I'm pulling away from a strafing run on a Kamekh or Dorkathi. When in normal cockpit view, the auto-firing algorithms on the turrets seem pretty weak.

Excalibur and Thunderbolt in WCP?

Ack, sorry about the title.

Anyway, I doubt that the longbow could survive without afterburners, at least, not your wingman's longbow.

The Longbow's afterburners were a bit dubious, really. Sure, it was nice to have that sudden burst of speed, but it still flew like a sack of bricks. Those damn Darkettes and Strakha were still on my tail. I really only use it to close faster on a capship. Otherwise I just kind of writhe around while my tailgun does its job.

One nice thing about the Longbow was that it had way more missiles than anything else--SIXTEEN missiles meant that you could just about skip using the guns for most of a mission and instead put all of that power to the shields.

It's very hard to say - we see what looks like a Longbow flash by in an episode of Wing Commander Academy... although its designation (F/A-76) suggests that it's from later on in the war. The Broadsword dates back to the first years of the conflict, though, so it's likely the older design.
