Jump Points

hey, do jump points evolve or something? they change in almost every major WC game excepting I and II

I know it was kind of mention in the WC4 novel, but I always saw Jump Points as being like tunnels. So what I didn't get was why fighters and such couldn't just go through it once it was opened.

The thing in the WC4 novel that allowed more ships to travel through the same point was the first time I ever found out they couldn't. I thought it was just some kind of regulation that any ship that couldn't jump by itself didn't, and every one that did used it's own drive.

I was referring to their apperance, like WCIII and IV had purple ones, and WCP/WCPSO had those Green ones (which I proudly state that I enjoyed more :))

I think that may have to do with the technology. Obviously they're going to be looking for new technology to harness the jumps, and they'll come across more efficient particles, for example, etc., that'd make it look different.

good explanation (of course, we know the real reason is that Origin wanted to change something so it would look cooler/different...) at first I thought that they were just really large jump-points, which were somehow different looking, that the Midway had to use, but then I started seeing fighters and smaller capships use them, so...

That could be the case, too. Artistically and Phsycicsally, something that is larger or closer will look like a different shade or sometimes a different color because it reflects more light (or for the ones that are closer, the light they reflect has less stuff to screw up the view than they would at farther away). Ever notice how all the orbital pictures of Mars looked kinda orangish reddish, but the pathfinder photos were a lot, lot brighter? That's why. Though, yes, the atmosphere probably had something to do with that.

I always liked the Privateer ones. Not really the purple mist floating in space, but the transit sequence you get when you jump.

The blue ones from WC3/4 were nicer than the green ones from WCP IMHO. Although the jumps in the WCP cutscenes look cool.

Another question: Is the movie Rapier jump-capable? I remember someone saying, after Blair and Devereaux found that Kilrathi ComCon, that the Kilrathi know that a Rapier does not fly alone in deep space without a carrier. So I assumed that they have no jump drive. But when Blair makes the final jump into SOL system, he activates the jump drive.
Does the Confederation Handbook perhaps state the Rapier as jump capable?

I liked the green jumps better.... especially in the prophecy movie scenes how it kinda opened and sucked in to open up rather than just open like in the WC3/WC4 cutscenes.

Also a quick question... what is the idea behind jumping? i know this has prolly be asked a million times and i dont want a science lesson, just the basic idea. are they wormholes or is it like in WCM where (i think) they use the gravitational "pull" of a quasar etc. to pull them in fast and then shoot them out the other side? like a slingshot effect? am i making sense to anyone?

Large gravity objects have naturally generated jump tunnels between them -- the average jump tunnel is between two star systems... and then special things like Black Holes and Quasars and Pulsars have unusual jump effects.

Best jump point I've seen is the one in the WC3 intro, where the Kilrathi dreadnought jumps to Kilrah.

I think B5 jumps are the best, only if they're through a gate, so you get the flashed beforehand (ok ok its not WC, but its still cool!)

Why do they freeze in the movie? Whats the 'physics' around that?

A jump drive on a medium fighter... *where* did we ever see this, especially in the early stages of Blair's career?

On a sidenote, the Rapiers from WC I and II are also jump capable... they can "jump" enemies... :)

Well, the Hornet and the Rapier II from Wing Commander 1 both mount jump engines... I can't really think of anything else -- but then there's not really anything earlier in Blair's career than the Hornet, is there?

You're talking about the movie, right?

If not:

  • I don't see how a light fighter could have a jump drive...
  • I don't see the reason for a fighter to have a jump drive, but not be jump capable...

No, I'm not talking about the movie -- the movie doesn't have Hornets or Rapier II's... we see them jump in a sequenc in Super Wing Commander. The Hornet and the Rapier II have jump drives and are jump capable... not sure what you're trying to say there.

There's also no technical reason why a Hornet can't have a jump drive -- I mean, they've mounted them on Ferrets...
