It`s finally here...

I'm not sure about the game but in the novel Tolwyn didn't get the death penalty. He got life without parole but hung himself because he believed his failure had doomed humanity.

What's really ironic about that is that the Nephilim seemed to come almost in answer to his words. Pretty interesting to see that, even as insane as he was, he was right.

I'm not sure it's ironic. Tolwyn's idea that there would be other aggressive races out there isn't some big insightful thing. Everyone knew/knows that they exist out there, and it's just a matter of time and preparation to defend against them. All the conventional military decisions Tolwyn made, such as pushing construction of the Vesuvius class, might have been right, but none of this makes a case for his insane choices. That topic is entirely separate (and probably shouldn't go any further in this thread).

You know, I'm thinking we should start up a list of words and phrases to not use unless you REALLY know what it means, preferrably by looking it up in a dictionary, and probably not use it even then.

"irony" and its derivatives would most likely be one of the first entries on that list.

Actually I know what irony means, I think it's ironic because it just so happened that Confed had no way of fighting the full Nephilim force. That someone so insane could be right about the need for an even stronger military is what's ironic. But I'm getting kind of off-topic here, so lets get back to the original discussion ok? :)

I understand a lot of people misuse the expression, "Begging the question."

Did you not see my post? I already explained that knowing we need to be prepared for future aggressors and Tolwyn's insane actions are completely separate things. And I also said then that this shouldn't be continued.

If Tolwyn never did the gen-select program and didn't fry those civilian transports, he probably could have come clean with his Black Lance forces without too much trouble.

It is too bad the WC decision makers decided to not include the Dragon (or its technology) in Wing Commander Prophecy.

I felt WCP was kind of an unrealistic progression in the series.

Besides not wanting to carry an uberfighter over to another game, it makes sense that Confed would not want to continue to use Dragons. They would have become attached too much to the actions of Tolwyn to not always leave one with a sour taste in your mouth.

I'm sure some of its tech is evident in WCP, but you have to remember that the Dragon was a advanced and expensive special ops type of craft. It is unlikely that even if Tolwyn had succeded carrier deck's would have been packed with Dragons...

I'm not sure what you mean - Prophecy follows Wing Commander IV fairly directly: cloaking is common, all the ships have glowing 'antimatter' intakes... there are 'charging' guns. Pound for pound, Prophecy's space superiority fighters outmaneuver and outgun the Lance -- it's not a case of rolling back history somehow.

If the Confederation even has the ability to reproduce Lance's (and there's no saying they do), there's almost certainly no desire -- the US didn't go home and manufacture their own Nazi jet designs after the war... they brought home captured fighters, studied them and then built new aircraft.

Exactly, that and that Prophecy's fighters probably are alot cheaper than the Dragon.

It would have been cool to have been unlockable for the flight simulator or something like that. I always thought the Lance was by far the most fun ship to fly.

I have no doubt the Vampire and more than likely the Panther would tear apart a Lance in 1v1 combat, but I just thought the red HUD, shifting wings, fusion guns, antimatter engine, just made for a real enjoyable fighter to play.

Logically WCP is a sequel in almost all respects, I just always felt let down by it, always imagined it would be a lot better.

I didn`t like the Dragon too much. I like the Vampire a little more than a big crate super ship *chuckles*

And the Panther is (visually) pretty much a wingless, segmented lance.
