If you have a firewall: disable Firewall for connections from localhost
Privateer Remake establishes a connection to itself (127.0.0.1)
many firewalls are incorrectly configured to block such connection (norton firewall, windows firewall) because such connections cannot cause harm to your computer since localhost is your own system (if your own system is infecting itself it has other means ;-) )
sometimes these firewalls will popup annoying messages about privateer connecting to itself--and sometimes this causes your video drivers to crash because a fullscreen app was interferred with by a popup window.
Properly configuring your firewall averts this condition.
For those of you who are unsure about how to properly configure a personal firewall you can tell privateer remake to pierce your firewall
by editing vegastrike.config and adding a line
<var name="pierce_firewall" value="true"/>
to the audio section
other options include a) playing in windowed mode
and b) playing without music (sad)
