Bandit LOAF

Long Live the Confederation!
The elder statesman of video gaming news sites, GameSpy, has posted "Top 10 PC Games We'd Like to See Remastered", an an article about... the top ten PC games they'd like to see remastered. The original Wing Commander takes the number seven slot. When they're right, they're right:
When I was in Junior High I helped the Confederation fight off the cat-like Kilrathi in the Vega campaign. I was stationed aboard the Tiger's Claw along with a memorable entourage of fellow flyboys. Till this day I still remember the wild antics of Manic, the cool calmness of Iceman, and the fatherly advice given to me by Paladin. I remember the first time I flew the bulky Scimitar and blowing away dozens of pancake-shaped Kilrathi Dralthi's with my Rapier. To say I have fond memories of the original Wing Commander from Origin Systems would be an understatement. I'd love to return to the Tiger's Claw and take down a few more of those rotten furballs. Better yet, I'd like to have my buddies join me and fly my wing... or against me.
You can read the entire article, which includes classics like Sierra/Dynamix's Aces series, here. Special thanks to Hurleybird and Dundradal for submitting this story.

Well The Ur-Quan Masters isn't *really* a remake as much as it is an enhanced port of the 3do version (with stuff from the PC version added back in).

Though UQM is more than enough. Star Control 2 doesn't need to be remade when you can play an enhanced bugfixed version today!

I think it's fully playable since v0.4 (or even earlier).

I can't believe it's been almost five years since it was first announced :)

I completely agree :)
Still i consider the sc2 one of the best games i ever played, with amazing story and background. Even today i am amazed by the original concept and some story details... '92 was a good year for games :)

Supposedly, "toys for bob" was planning to make a SC3, but don't know what happened to that...

Well they wouldn't be able to call it Star Control 3, but they do have a petition on their website in support of a "true" sequel to Star Control 2. They hope to obtain rights from Accolade or some such manner. Toys For Bob made Star Control and Star Control 2 while 3 was made by a completely different team.

Yah i know, i have it. I was talking about the "unofficial" sc3, the one with the petition.
Paul Riche And Fred Ford(if i remember correctly) were the creators of original sc, so i considerd their (never started) version of sc3, just didn't want to clog this thread with useless info...

Disagreement

I have to say that I REALLY disagree with them putting X-Wing and TIE fighter above Wing Commander, and especially their reasoning as to why--gameplay (although I would guess I'm preaching to the choir here). As much as I liked the LucasArts games, and I have to credit them that they had a polygon engine first, they didn't hold a candle to Wing Commander in gameplay. In those games, you pretty much always run at full speed, whip your nose around, aim and fire. There's no fun maneuvering that there is in Wing Commander. The most brilliant innovation that Wing Commander had, arguably, was the addition of the afterburner which allowed a host of exciting maneuvers to do and to counter...

Nah, Tie Fighter is the best game ever. :)
