How about this?

Has anybody tried putting together a petition to persuade Origin to allow third party developers to make Wing Commander games?
Or, and this is a little more off kilter, has anybody thought about actually programming a new WC game and submitting it to Origin. I know that they do take thrid party game submissions.

I've been dormant to the CZ for quite some time. But... this one I can't let pass. Really.

Dude... dude dude dude.

You must have missed the myriad of attempts, fan projects, letters, threats of terrorism (those were mostly mine), and general whining that has been occurring in the general direction of Origin/EA for the past howevermany years.

Now I won't get into the blatant insulting here, it's really not necessary. But really. The search option attached to the CZ is your friend.

It's been done. Some attempts are still going on, actually.

It won't happen for quite some time.

Ah, I've just been told that they took down the search feature. I hadn't noticed. So my bad on that bit.

But really, they do announce these things on the CIC.

I made a Wing Commander game, and I am considering submitting it to Origin.

Unfortunately, the game can currently only support two ships at a time.

I'm not sure how I can send it Origin unfortunately. What I do is I paint my hands different colors to look like different WC fighters, than I fly them around. THey can't really "shoot" each other per se, but there's alot of ramming and I make some really cool sound effects with my head.

Maybe I should tape it and send it in.

EA / Origin said there will be another WC game. We just don't know how long we'll have to wait for it. :(

Oh contrare sir, I know for a fact that Origin, and more specifcally EA, does take game submissions. I know because I have two of their submission packets sitting down in my room.
In order for them to accept a submission for review the game has to be at least at a demo stage, that is you have to be able to send them a working playable demo of your game. The packet also contains a questionairre asking what type of game it is, which company would be best suited to publish the game, and so on.

...If at ALL

Oh, now now.

Lets take a moment to look at the worst case scenario, EA never picks it up. According to US copyright law, if they haven't touched WC within... hmmm... about 17 years now, then their claim on it is gone (if you want a look at a court case along these lines, go to www.guerillanews.com and read their Coca-Karma thing: that exact case won't apply, but it's similar in many respects). And if that happens, whomever picks it up first suddenly has the rights to it. So at the VERY worst, we have a 17 year wait.

Now let's look at a more realistic perspective. WC was put aside so that they could focus on UO, which promised to be a huge cash cow, and rightfully so. It's a good game, it's been making them good money. It won't last forever, however. Sooner or later, they'll need to let it go and find something to replace it. By then, who knows where gaming technology will be? But they know that WC has a large fanbase, and that if they need a quick title to get a little income, WC is a good place to turn. It might end up being a crap-tacular game, but it will be a game. Or even better than that, EA will want the quick cash and will sell the rights to WC off to someone else.

Ah, but let's dissect that last statement a little bit. "EA will want the quick cash and will sell the rights to WC off to someone else." Since EA has, lately, been dropping a lot of projects to focus on MMOGs, why aren't they letting go of WC? Selling the rights would be a large influx of cash to help with development, and we know they've been a little less than normal profits wise, mainly because they've been throwing money at EAB. Why not ditch WC for the cash?

There are a few reasons they might not.

1 - It hasn't occurred to them. We know this is probably not the case, as a lot of people have approached them asking about that (none of them larger game corportations, but you know, at least the thought has been given to them).

2 - They don't need the money badly enough. This is an outright lie, as I'm sure you've noticed they've been firing everyone that isn't nailed down. The UO support team is a skeleton crew and it's still one of their larger sources of income. They are slowly - very slowly - being pushed out of the PC game business and are focusing on console games, a fast but not lasting source of income. Not exactly desperate, but they'd probably like a nice buffer to help keep them above the profit line.

3 - The shareholders told them not to. This is a semi-distinct possibility, shareholders would want to keep their avenues open, and not using WC isn't really costing them anything yet.

4 - The big one you've all been waiting for: They plan on doing something with it. I have to say this is the most likely. It won't happen anytime soon, but I daresay that within... oh, 3-4 years we'll start hearing rumors about a new WC game. It won't be under the Origin name, though.

Anyway. Just my opinions.

Oh, and most of you are idiots.

For computer software, the realm to which games belong, copyright last *70* years, not 17. So the wait is a little longer than I think we are hoping to have to wait.

"Great-great grandpa, can you help me with this math?"

"Eh, quiet sonny! I'm about to enter the jumppoint!"

Well, everyone has to be good at something.... :)

Well, in any event, here's what I would like to see if they did in fact sell the rights to other companies.
First off I would like to see Prophecy 2 and 3 come out of Digital Anvil, or the group that made Crimson Skies(killer game dude)
Second that first person shooter game rumor that popped up awhile back, that would be cool if somebody made it with the C&C Renegade engine that Westwood is currently putting together.
Third the RTS that was rumoured about the same time, Westwwod could do a killer job on that. Ever since their inception Westswood has been making basically the same game over and over again. But each new game that games out has added innovations and they obviously know how to do it right.
And lastly, I'd like to see somebody come out with a semi-prequel. Something set during the days of the Tiger's Claw or maybe onboard the Gettysburg during the mutiny. Sort of a story from the past but using current technology.
