Shaggy

Vice Admiral
What type of fighter did Taggert fly in WC1, I've forgotten. And did he join Intel after he left the Tiger's Claw, or did he fly fighters off another carrier?
And does anybody know what happened to Flash after WC3?
Canon info would be preferred but theories are welcome as well, crackpot or otherwise ;)

After WC3? For Flash, there was no after WC3. He died in Ariel, according to the WC3 novel.

As for Paladin, we don't know anything about what happened between SM2 and WC2, except that he worked with Hobbes a bit (and Hobbes tells us that he saved Paladin's life once because "he had nothing better to do at the time").

Regarding Flash, in the WC3 game, it appears that only Maniac and Vagabond actually survive the Kilrah missions. It seems to be implied that the other wingmen die (you can choose from Flint--if you didn't choose Rachael and then get told off by Flint, Vaquero--if you didn't go after Hobbes, and Flash--if you got Flash on the roster to start with). From that I would assume that Flash died in the run on Kilrah.

 Thanks for the info. I've had trouble runnin WCKS and I haven't read the WC3 novel in awhile so I haven't been able to research this stuff on my own.
Thanks again.

Well, if you want to try and incorporate the WCM, Paladin was in Intel well before WC1. Paladin flew the Scim and Hornet in WC1, the FreeTrader, the Gorah Khan(sp), I think a shuttle somewhere along the way and the heavy fighter/transport that sported the cloaking device to get the info on the Hakaga fleet. He also probably has flown a Wildcat (I think thats the name of what Tolwyn flew in Action Stations).

According to Freedom Flight, Paladin joined Spec Ops pretty much immediately after the Firekka operation. Mind you, it probably would have been several weeks at least before the Bonnie Heather was deployed on a mission, but circumstances made that happen sooner than planned.

This thread just confirms the fact that I'm missing a lot by not having read the novels. Does anyone know where I can find a good synopsis on each that I could read and learn the general plot, the characters, the ships, ect?

How would have Chris Robert's felt when *spoiler alert* Blair was to die in part 5?!
Was Origin doing this to revenge Chris's overbudget?

And is it true that WC4 didn't sell enough copies to cover their budget that is a frightening US$10million! Compared to other sci-fi movies this one cheaper!:D
And what was the budget for WC prophercy?! The real sets they used in the cutscenes looks quite expensive!!!

Did Origin abandoned WC series because of the poor sales of Prophecy?!

thanks!

Last time I checked WC4 and Prophecy both did really well. I don't think they had any trouble recouping their budgets.
I don't know the exact figures for Prophecy but WC3 cost around $4 million while WC4 cost around $11 million, and prophecy was somewhere between the two.
And lastly, if Origin wanted to take revenge on Chris Roberts' overbudget they would just garnish his wages for about a hunded years;)

Ack, you should know better.. Prophecy wasn't even the last WC game that Origin made! Do you think they made Secret Ops and gave it away for free because Prophecy sold poorly? Prophecy sold ten times better than your average space sim. There were several WC games in production after Prophecy, and one by one they were picked off by fate and blunders of one sort or another.

The problem has nothing to do with the sales of WCP. EA is going for the online game market; it's a major shift. Westood, and incredibly successful company, with great tradition in gaming, comparable to Origin, was closed. Origin is but an empty shell now - they don't create worlds, they maintain their single world now, Ultima Online. The company is still there, but they are not what they used to be in the late 80's and specially on the early 90's.

Another problem is the overall lack of interest in space combat sim and space battles in general. Good games like Freespace, Starlancer and I-War didn't do as well as they should.

Time issues

I have always been troubled by the changes made to the WC time line from the one posted in Claw-Marks (WC1) to the one finaly getting into the WCKS manual.

Could some explain to home the Enyo Engagement of 2639 and the McAuliffe Ambush of 2634, both from the WC1 time-line, became a single battle in McAuliffe according to the WC3 time-line?
(there are more issues, but lets start with this one)

Yeah the closure of Westwood is very tragic indeed!
Westwood was the last company making use FMV with great use, although Origin does it better! Eventhough Mechwarrior 4 made use of FMV, I heard it was pretty bad and horrible.

It's not that two events become one, but certain (sometimes other) events are the ones that end up being highlighted.

I can (G) They didn't actually become a single battle -- both events (2634 and 2639) are still listed in the Kilrathi Saga manual... they just screw up the location for the second, saying it *also* took place at McAuliffe instead of Enyo. Assume the Kilrathi attacked both colonies (G)

Assuming we live in a world where the stupidest and most insane conspiracy theory is automatically true, then without a doubt, yes.

Seriously, though, Chris probably had little/no emotional attachement to the Blair character. Killing him off was a good story and that's all (coupled with Mark Hamill's supposed desire not to play the character in the future). They payed *tribute* to Chris Roberts, with the kind words in the Kilrathi Saga booklet and by giving Blair Roberts' callsign in WCP...

And is it true that WC4 didn't sell enough copies to cover their budget that is a frightening US$10million! Compared to other sci-fi movies this one cheaper!

Wing IV actually cost $14 million... and no, it was probably impossible for the game to ever make that money back. EA, however, certainly knew that going into the project -- the *hope* was that such a professional 'interactive movie' would propel PC gaming from a niche market into something with widespread appeal. That didn't happen (at least, not on account of WCIV), so they weren't especially happy.

And what was the budget for WC prophercy?! The real sets they used in the cutscenes looks quite expensive!!!

The video sequences for Prophecy cost a rumored $750,000.

Did Origin abandoned WC series because of the poor sales of Prophecy?!

Yes and no. Prophecy sold very well compared to every other space sim on the market (10+ times more)... but it didn't make as much money as Origin made off of Ultima Online. The decision was made to go ahead with online-only properties, and the fact that Westwood called first dibs with 'Earth and Beyond' meant that Origin didn't put out an MMP Wing Commander title. (Which, I'll bet, EA regrets right now...).
