I can't download the Starter Package or the first chapter of Standoff. I always get this "HELP/NAVIGATION ERROR - DNS Error Internet Explorer cannot find ftp.wcnews.com." error message. When I try to right click and Save Target As, I always get a "Connection with the server could not be established" message. I need some help. Is it a problem with my settings? Any help would be appreciated.

Well now, that's a new error. I don't know what the problem is - maybe somebody else can suggest something.

However, I must note that apart from the CIC we do have two mirrors listed on the downloads page... so, maybe one of them will work for you?

Hmm, so clearly it's a problem on your end if multiple sites are giving you an error. Further, that's not a real error. That's a spam/spyware/parasite redirect. It looks like some program you have installed is screwing up your ftp downloads. Do you have something called "internet optimizer" installed? If so, it's not optimizing your internet. I'd recommend running Adware and Spybot S&D to remove crap like that from your system. Install, update and scan with both, because they'll find different things.

There are a couple legitimate programs for download resuming that you can use as an alternative to web browsers. GetRight is what I use. Just make sure you don't set it to multithreaded downloads, or else Kris will reject you. http://www.getright.com/

Thanks a lot! I figured it was some kind of that adware/spyware crap. Yeah, it's Internet Optimizer, and I definitely didn't install it! I'll run those programs and try again!

Thank you!

Ugh! Now instead of getting that Internet Optimizer error message, I'm getting a simple "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message, from all the download sites!

I appreciate any and all help!

It either installed itself through Internet Explorer or it was slipped in with some other "free" software that you installed. It sounds like this thing might have messed up your internet connection settings. Your ISP should have a walkthrough on their website. Verify that everything is set up correctly.

You can also connect with a standard ftp client. Connect to 67.19.216.109 with the username anonymous, no password. Navigate to /files/mods and download the Standoff package.

I checked my settings and they are the check out.

Kris, I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you mean by connect to a standard ftp client. I'm pretty much computer illiterate, much to my embarrassment.

In your Internet Explorer browser, type fttp://67.19.216.109 into your address bar, and if it prompts you for a name and password, just click 'anonymous' - from there, you'll be taken to a folder display. Double click the files folder, then mods folder, and you can download Standoff from there by copying it, and pasting it to one of your directories.

That didn't work either. It told me I don't have permission to access the site. A connection with the server could not be established.

I've gone over my settings again, and everything is in order. I called the Bell tech guy and he confirmed that for me.

Thanks for all your help guys! I'll keep trying! I'll look at my settings again. Maybe I missed something.

I meant using something like cuteftp. Tempest's method may work, but there's a 't' too many (it's ftp, not fttp). With an ftp client you would bypass the browser entirely, though.

No, I'm at home, but I do have two personal computers networked together. Would that have an effect on it?
